Well, I was enjoying S3, until last night.
There's been a lot to like this year. The wonderful cast chemistry is still there. The good acting is still there. They've had excellent guest cast in most of the eps. There are still lots of fun things to make me smile in every episode. Granted, the source of the fun is a bit different. Instead of Steve tossing people in shark cages and using grenades in pawn shops, we have naked hula dancers and Toast and his glands. But it's still fun. We had one of the best eps of the entire series, with 3.06.
I don't mind Steve being toned down a little bit, but last night's portrayal of him was WAY off base. If it's just a one-off bad ep, I can get past it, but if this is the new norm then for me it's a serious problem with the long-term character development of the main character that needs to be addressed.

Someone earlier said the infatuation of S1 has worn off for them - I think that wording is rather appropriate. S1 was exciting, fresh, pushed the boundaries, had us all instantlydrawn in by great characters and (overall) great plot lines. S2 was generally yucky. S3 is a vast improvement but not the full flavor of S1. I still love the show, I have had OMG moments this season, I can be patient and actually enjoy the process of slow, drawn-0ut plotlines. AND - IMO, it is still way better than so many other shows on TV.
A comparison from me, and maybe other NCIS fans can relate: NCIS used to be exciting, engaging, must-see-TV for me, but about 3 years ago it had lost that feeling for me. I was often bored or distracted during episodes. It is still one of my favorites, but in a warm-fuzzy sort of way, not the high passion it used to have. This was about the time NCIS LA and H50 appeared with a bit more action, and I think that might have something to do with it. There's still alot about NCIS that is good, I won't miss it, but it is a comfortable favorite.
As to Steve's new demeanor this season, the thought came to me that he would have been much more driven in S1 with the goal of revenge for Papa's death, S2 was still a pursuit of Wo Fat and the Shelbourne line, but now he's settled into a more comfortable situation, some things have been resolved in his life - just fight the weekly bad guys - until we get back to strong conflict with Wo Fat and what is sure to come with the Mama storyline.

You know, you just triggered a rather interesting point in my thought pattern. We don't even have governor interaction this year. We went from the Gov being the center of the universe, to being MIA. I was thinking that the other day, has the actor got another role. I do miss Jean Smart , she played it so well . I miss Jean, too. The current governor doesn't do much.

I was disappointed when she turned out to be evil, and even more disappointed when she was killed off, although it did make things interesting plotwise.

But the plot was left hanging--does the current governor know that his predecessor was bad? Was there any kind of investigation? It would have been nice to have that finished up.

You're right, parts of it were left hanging. I guess I should have said "potential to be interesting if it was ever expanded on" regarding the impact on the plot. I think we have to assume that the current governor did find out his predecessor was corrupt, it surely would have come out after Steve was finally cleared of her murder. I would like to see more follow-up into how Wo Fat got his claws into the highest level of Hawaii State Government, and if there are other political figures he's still controlling. It seems foolish of him to kill off his only government puppet, but if he does have others in his pocket they weren't much help when he was incarcerated at the end of S2. Urk, so many loose ends.

Yeah, we have no idea how far his influence extends...

I know it would not have worked out plot wise but it would have been fun to keep her around with us knowing she was bad and H50 not .

Finally watched the Monday night episode and I must say that Petey is pretty smart! I remember the Lori character being introduced as the female McGarret and a potential love interest. There was a lot of resistance to the idea (the actress didn't help), especially the thought of a shift away from the core four. Guess what? I discovered last night that we got exactly what we didn't want. A love interest just as kickbutt McGarret - Catherine Rollins. This is turning into a pretty boring show that has strayed away from the season 1 phenom we all loved watching. Not sure I will be watching much longer either.

Interesting and timely thread. I haven't been here for a while but thought I'd check in because of the new ep tonight. As I logged in, I realized that I'm not all that excited about there being a new episode tonight. I really used to look forward to it. For some reason, I lack the enthusiasm I once had for the show.
