Work on the third season of “Hawaii Five-0” began today, July 9, with a traditional Hawaiian ceremony at Manoa Valley District Park, a few blocks from a neighborhood where filming was to take place.
Kahu Blaine Kamalani Kia, the show’s cultural adviser, told the crowd of about 100 to bring positive energy to their work.

“With all the characters, and all that you have to deal with each other, that’s a lot of kaumaha (heaviness),” he said. “These are the burdens you carry on your shoulders. There are good ones and bad ones. We don’t want the bad ones, we just want the good ones.”
Major figures in the production in attendance included executive producer Peter Lenkov, series stars Alex O’Louglin and Daniel Dae Kim, new series regular Michelle Borth, and new recurring star Christine Lahti, who will play Steve McGarrett’s mother, and occasional guest stars Taylor Wily, Teilor Grubbs, Dennis Chun and Al Harrington. Three other stars, Scott Caan, Grace Park and Masi Oka, were not scheduled to be on set Monday.

The show ended its second season in a cliffhanger, with Park’s character Kono Kalakaua tied up and thrown into the ocean, Caan’s character Danny Williams in a custody battle, Kim’s Chin Ho Kelly finding his wife near death, and O’Loughlin’s McGarrett uncovering another layer to the “Shelburne” mystery, the subplot that has driven the show for the first two seasons.

Lahti, an Emmy and Oscar winner, called the ceremony “wonderful.”
“I’ve done a lot of shows and never experienced anything like this,” she said.
Lenkov said the new season will have “a lot of bromance,” referring to the banter between Caan and O’Loughlin’s characters, but in a more serious tone added that it will have “complications.”
“We added the mom, we’ve added Michelle Borth,” he said. “That’s going to complicate things.”
