Yeah, well, it's also illegal to hang a subject off a roof and throw one in a shark cage and strap one to a car and drive around..I don't watch for real-life scenarios. But I am taking Criminal Justice 101 right now, so I do find it interesting how it would be in real life. Thanks for posting this, Trina.

Regarding Catherine's training: We don't know enough about her backstory to make judgment on whether or not she has had training beyond "minimal weapons training" outside of the Navy. And I think it's more than plausible that she has had training in some form of hand-to-hand combat (not necessarily via the Navy). We just don't know at this point (and we may never know. That's in the writer's hands).
Who's to say that the writers didn't pick up on Steve's position being illegal? (BTW, I didn't include Catherine in this, because she isn't an officer of the law. As far as we know she is on leave from Naval Intelligence) We have to consider that this is a fictional television show. Not everything is going to be realistic. You can nitpick at everything that's not realistic, but your television viewing experience won't be very pleasurable. Considering that Steve is the main character, and without him being either a SEAL or a police officer, we would not only cease to see the same character of Steve that we do, we wouldn't have a show either.

I agree with what you said, nycgal.
And thanks, trina, for your post. But we've all learned that H50 plays by their own rules this is TV afterall, not reality. And quite frankly, every Monday I look forward to a break from reality.

You're welcome, H52012 and Cookiejar.
Musicfreak, we were discussing Catherine's background and training, and I came across that post, the contents of which, I should restate, is not mine, but something someone on another message board posted, where people were discussing the same thing we were. You can take it or leave it, but the scenario on this show would naturally make people curious about the procedure in real life, since the show does not provide that information in the dialogue. In Steve's case, the governor didn't tell him he was in charge, she swore him in, so there was some official hiring for Steve. Catherine's place is still unclear.
What reason would the writers have for knowing that Steve's position was illegal, but letting it go at that? There would have to be a reason in the storyline for the chief of the unit to not be legally authorized to be in charge. As it is, their actions, as Cookiejar mentioned, were illegal, but would it make sense for the writers to cap it off with the man in charge also having no legal authority to be in charge? That's a stretch.
Given the lack of attention to many details in the storylines, I don't think was something the writers knew about but let slide.
I also want to point out that, even if you know nothing about naval ranks and who has authority to do what, the viewer would still naturally be curious as to what position these characters are in and what they can and cannot do. In that sense, when they see a character engaging in actions which they know are not things they saw them doing before, like the scene you mentioned where Cath is working with Chin and Kono, then it will cause someone to wonder. Maybe they won't nitpick, but it if such scenarios are employed by the writers where Cath is doing law enforcement work while with the navy -whether on leave or not - it will cause confusion as to whether she is part of Five-O, working on loan from the navy, or on her own.

Have been reading all these posts and felt the need to interject...
Let's keep in mind this is FICTIONAL TV show and not meant in any way to be a representation of the way the real world works in terms of military/Navy authority vs actual HPD/Gov's task force authority. It is mostly, if not all, fiction created solely for our entertainment. To quibble about the accuracy or legitimacy of the situations and circumstances is rather pointless and self defeating. Things will never be the way they should be in the real world, it is a given...this show is NOT intended to be a documentary or a true representation of law enforcement in HI or anywhere else.
Bottom line, we do not know exactly what capacity Cath is authorized to operate or not operate in. Maybe (hopefully) the show will elaborate on Cath's actual situation/circumstance in a later episode - we don't know at this point - let's give the show a chance to explain in more detail.
At the end of the day, trying to impose actual, real life rules and regulations to this type of TV show is not valid and not what the creators ultimately intended, IMHO. The show will take dramatic/creative license to make their stories work...all crime procedurals do it and anyone who attempts to hold up each scenario/situation to the core tenants of the actual rules and regulations of each type of authority/law enforcement will be sadly disappointed because they will not align with reality - never have, never will...it's just he way TV shows work these days.
Sorry to send this thread off in another direction, but felt the need to voice my opinion. Please forgive my digression.

As someone said, this show is not reality, but fiction. And with most fiction, once you accept the major premise you are good to go for the rest of the story. We all know from past experience, Peter expects the viewers to assume and accept a lot in his storytelling; kind of like watching science fiction. Many people don't care for sci-fi because it tends to stretch current believability. If you think of H50 in this way, you will enjoy it a whole lot more!

The Chief Petty Officer who posted on imdb clearly didn't understand that Steve transferred to the Reserves so he'd be able to accept the Governor's offer to lead the task force. Someone in the Reserves IS allowed to carry out "powers that maintain law and order". There are police officers across the country who are also in the Reserves. I have a good friend in the Reserves and he's a police officer; he's not under the direction of POTUS in that position. And Steve clearly had training in his position as a SEAL that Cath didn't receive so nothing about his skills with weapons or as a weapon is beyond belief to me.
That being said, I also don't watch the show for its real-life scenarios. It's just fun to watch something for an hour that I don't have to think about and analyze too much. I like Cath and I don't really mind that they've put a gun in her hand a couple times (although I'll agree with those who've said that including her in the scene with Chin and Kono clearly the suspect's place was a stretch but at least they had the good sense to keep her in the background while Chin and Kono did the actual clearing).

ok, we're getting rather technical in here. like people have said it's a t.v show. t.v shows are really not meant to be logical and t.v shows have been known to not entirely go by the rules.
seriously, hang a guy off a roof, throw a guy in a shark tank, tie a guy to the trunk of a car, fly into north korea without too much trouble, easy find your tortured friend, blow up a bridge in north korea and fly back out again without much trouble, water board a guy, and my favourite, helicopter with claw attached to it to help in one very elaborate escape that would make james bond spit out what ever he was drinkin and be impressed.
seriously, logic and reason goes out the window with the majority of t.v shows these days. this is why i enjoy this show.
and as for cath's presence, she and steve known each other for years, i have no doubt have had many conversations, because i got the impression from the first episode of season 3 that he's pretty much told her everything. so she knows he's probably to afraid to let her get into close in fear of losing her altogether.
also, do you really think the navy would have left steve go into the reserves that easily especially since we were told he was the best the navy has ever seen?

I like Michelle Borth's role as Catherine. She is supportive of the Core 4 and helps when she is asked. She is not an expert at everything like you know who. She doesn't step into the bromance of Steve and Danny and I haven't heard her call Danny " Danno " yet. Let's keep in mind how upset we were last season. Season 3 is so much better than season 2. I think we will enjoy a great year with H50. It has been a wonderful start so far.

I like Catherine and Michelle Borth and I think that they are doing a great job putting her in the show without making it the "Catherine Rollins Show". But what I don't get is everyone calling her Steve's girlfriend. Not once has it seemed to be more than friends with benefits. When she's in town, they hookup. When she's not around, they don't seem to sit there and pine. In fact, last season Steve even called her "An old friend" not "My ex", "my girlfriend" or anything that would make me think that they were ever in a committed relationship. Alex even said in an interview that Cath is Steve's best friend besides Danny. I just always assumed that with her 2 appearances a season she was just a friend with benefits kind of person. I think I was as shocked as Catherine when Doris asked her if she loved Steve. I'm sure she does love him, but that doesn't mean that she is IN LOVE with him. Anyway, just my humble opinion.

The reason I think this way is two-fold. Firstly, I think the writers have established that Catherine has an understanding and strong respect for Steve and Danny's friendship and I don't think they would have her cross this line. As far as we know, only Steve is aware of the true origin of 'Danno' (which is so cute and endearing it makes me smile) and anyone else (Steve's mom or even Catherine) using this nickname is like mocking Danny and would be stepping over an imaginary line that only Steve is allowed to cross. When Doris called Danny 'Danno', it was actually quite funny and it was her bull-in-the-china-shop way of trying to interject herself into Steve's life. And Danny, for his part, was very quick to point out to Doris that he preferred her to call him 'Danny'. The second reason I don't think they will have Catherine using the "Danno' nickname any time soon is for the simple fact that the last time a lady with a crush on Steve dared to use it, the entire fandom erupted in disgust and revolt. Anyone remember the Halloween ep from LY when LWeston tried to make a snide swipe at Danny by calling him 'Danno' and the fan backlash that followed. If anyone didn't already dislike the LW character before, that moment pretty much sealed her fate in many people's minds. So I am truly hoping that once again the writers have learned another valuable lesson from S2....NO ONE, except Grace and Steve, is allowed to call Danny 'Danno'...Ever. Period. The End.

Personally, I found Episode 3.03 so, so, so much better than Episode 2.03 this time last year that I'm more than happy to give Cath (and the writers) a fair chance to impress me.

to be fair to doris as well, danno was the first thing steve called danny when they got off the plane. so, she went with it. plank face last year did it out of anger more than any thing else, ether way she had no right to even go there. Catherine has enough respect for mcdanno as a pairing/friendship/bromance and that showed to when they were at the governors ball last season, she didn't get in the middle of there argument over the season tickets. it's safe to say that catherine has known steve for a long time and has developed a friendship if not boarding on boyfriend/girlfriend territory, even if nether one are ready to admit to that yet, because steve has called it a thing between the two of them, it's gone beyond friendship at this stage. and judging by the first episode of this season, he trusts her enough to protect his mother from wo fat. they are comfortable with each other to joke around, prime example Catherine's joke about mammy issues.seriously danny can't even get away with mentioning to steve about his daddy issues without having the usual cargument. they obviously care about each other, prime example of the hug last monday and him reassuring that they were fine, and to be honest she showed enough amount of concern without going overboard. which is something i cheered, because it was appropriate and not mushy. she knows he can take care of himself. i'm not looking for soap opera from the two of them. the two of them have their own thing going on. also, the two of them have been back and forth between deployments, so obviously a firm steady relationship couldn't be established. but it appears to me from what i've seen, they always come back to each other, and i know i've said this point before, who on earth comes back to hawaii for a 48 hour leave(especially when your working on the other side of the world) to go to a governor's ball with their "friend with benefits" if you didn't care about the guy? seriously the sex must be out this world fantastic or there's something more than ether one can admit. also, any one else wanting catherine to lay into mama McG for the way she's treating steve? phew, end rant.

I haven't been around too often because of exactly this... Every discussion about Cath becomes a shipper war.... I like Cath and I think Michelle is a great actress, and I can't even compare with last year because Cath and Lori are so different that now I don't feel like killing myself when she's on a scene like I felt with Lori... I like the way they're showing her, I'd like some explanation about her leave and also prefer they don't put her in a crime scene but I'm REALLY enjoying so far. What I think is that Steve clearly has commitment/trust issues... It wouldn't be normal for a guy like him to just admits he's on a relationship. He's messed up, so I guess Cath will admit first.
And as for her spending her leave with him, well for me it's very obvious she's going to realize she loves him and suffer a little while he's struggles with all of his issues... That's just an opinion, but I'm already prepared to be attacked.
