Actually, ScarlaRose, I can see Steve applying law enforcement techniques and interrogating them in separate rooms, so they can't hear what story the other is making up to cover their asses.
I can also picture him telling Joe, "Doris said such-and-such" when she really didn't, and vise versa, to catch them in their lies.
And ideally, it won't take all season for it to happen.

Maybe this will all come to a climax during November sweeps. *crossing my fingers* Yea, Runner, I suppose I could see that in the future, but I'm not sure Steve is ready to start lying to Doris yet. She seems to still have a Mom hold on him. Maybe something will set him off in the next couple episodes that will make him beyond fed up with his Momma-drama, and then he will be angry enough to do whatever it takes. However, I do agree that maybe they should be in separate rooms. That would probably be better. It's going to be good, isn't it.
