I think Mary Ann is more "potential" than "dud". A lot has to do with the writers not fleshing out her character more. Although, I commend them for keeping her character alive since season one and not just having her vanish into thin air. She is Steve's family and brings out a different side to him. Even mentioning her without seeing her provides continuity which I think is important when telling any story. And I think PL said she was coming back but who knows. She frustrates Super Seal and that is fun to watch. I think they should keep her. And, keep in mind Alex has said he enjoys playing off the Steve/Mary relationship - so why not bring her on every now and then.

For me, the character of Mary Ann and the quality and quantity of screen time she has is all about Steve and who he was, is, and is becoming as a cop unravelling the history of his family rather than a Navy Seal. Mary Ann doesn't do anything for me, but I adore Big Brother Steve. Plus, the writers have even used Steve's and Mary's relationship during carguments to make important points during Danno's brother and partner issues. If you take Mary Ann away, then bye-bye Big Brother Steve and that is definitely not okay with me. However, you bring Mary Ann in more than she is and you begin to lose Superseal Steve because he's all about Mom and Sis... too much. I think the writers have a great balance going, and Alex does a great job of telling the emotional side of Steve's story and still maintaining the integrity of the seal in Steve.
Now, all that to say, I do think Mary Ann could have potential if the writers would use her that way. They have shown that Mary has detective skills and can be one tough cookie if need be so they could always flesh that out in the future. I wouldn't mind seeing her put her mother in her place some day. She could actually do a better job of that than Steve because daughter's tend to be more high-spirited and emotional when it comes to mother-daughter relationships than mother-son relationships are. I would also like seeing her come to Steve's aid sometime. It would be nice for Steve to find that he has family outside of his 50hana that will be there for him. I could picture Mary doing some fine undercover work. Can you picture a scene where Steve gets captured and somehow Mary gets brought in as either the deliverer of the goods or the new member of the gang? I even think Alex would enjoy telling that story. So, yes, I think there could be potential for Mary Ann.

Don't forget this is also the man that keeps dropping ugly little hints that SWSNBN could potentially come back, so it's impossible to sift out truth from PLPR.

It's pretty easy to get it out of him, he drops it more than an alien drops bombs on the screen, whether it makes it to the final storyline is quite another story.
Taryn is actually left open for future storyline considerations, if she can stay out of jail.

My personal opinon: she's 3D wallpaper, good for a little bit of scenery to enhance Steve's storyline, and then fades into the sun. Totally agree. In my opinion, her character hasn't grown much at all (if any) since we first met her. She's still a selfish little brat who can't keep a job, and gets in trouble (that sounds mean. I guess I'm just tired of the same old thing with her). Her life certainly hasn't been easy (losing her mom, being shipped off to the mainland, losing her father, being kidnapped, blah blah blah) but I'm not convinced she would have behaved any differently if those things hadn't happened. I don't know. I'm not crazy about her. I do enjoy big brother Steve, but with Mama around we have enough emotional stuff that we don't really need Mary. I'm ok with her appearing maybe once or twice more this season. I think for me, any more than that would be overdoing it but...*shrugs*
