Thanks twassbrake. It's refreshing to hear about all these idyllic Halloween celebrations. When you're surrounded by all this gloom a person can get cynical. Say a prayer for those firefighters who risk their lives for these idiot arsonists. I first heard about Halloween in Detroit back in the 1970s, I think. I thought it had improved somewhat. Not enough, apparently. Sorry you have to go through that every year.

So where I live, Halloween is either a huge deal, or you hate it. Some people go all out with the huge costume parties, graveyard set ups in the yard, an enormous amount of candy, etc. I have never really been into halloween, ever. I used to hate trick-or-treating. I live in a neighborhood where we all know the immediate people in the specific neighborhood, so its safe to trick-or treat. Many people go to the mall or church run events. Most local schools have parties during school as well. We hand out candy and all, but not after 8-9ish. Its many little kids anyway. Some yeards we have a lot of people, other years we have like 40? I know that a lot of kids dress up for school and stuff. I just have never really been into it. Last halloween, everybody in my family was sick, except me, so they were all sleeping....(or trying to) So I was watching movies and answering the door for people. We used to always carve pumpkins. That was always my favorite part because I love arts and crafts type stuff, but that has never been the same since the day my dad left with the militaty to go overseas for 2 years. After he left, we carved our pumpkins, and it hasn't been the same since. I remember that day like it was yesterday. I was out the other day and almost everything int he stores are Christmas now. There is very little Halloween stuff left, it has been replaced already....

Kbob, I want to live in your town!!! As long as I can have internet, I think I'd be totally happy living in a small town. Problem here is our lousy long brutal winters. If you're in a small town, it's like being cut off from everything.

Decorating here is a big deal - lights, characters on the lawn, pumpkins, corn stalks on yard lights. Our subdivision has been lit up for 2 weeks now and every couple days another neighbor joins the party. My hubby and I usually put our stuff outside about 2 weeks before Halloween (probably this Sunday) - that's enough time to 'celebrate'! Cities around here usually have Trick or Treat on the Sunday closest to the holiday - like from 4 - 6 PM. Really bugs the dads who have to answer the doorbell when they are trying to watch the NFL game - because mom is out walking the neighborhood with the kids! Our Community Center also holds a Halloween Party for kids on Saturday - much safer than letting kids go door to door, but not all cities (especially the bigger ones) do that. Some parents let their kids do both.

I remember my first Halloween here in Canada (we didn't have it back home) - we lived in an apartment building, and it was a blast!!! There were 4 buildings in all, and a bunch of us went from one building (start at the top and hit every floor) to the other and so on. We'd stop by someone's apartment every now and then to dump our full bags and get new ones. I couldn't even carry all my candy home and left some at my friend's. A couple of years later, the apartments started having a table at the main entrance, manned by some parents, where they would give each kid that came by some candy, and no one was allowed inside the building. Very sad and not fun at all.

Beads, you reminded me of the stupidest memory I have of Halloween, way back when the change was in process from real trick-or-treating to hovering parents and no fun. I was living in Arlington (a Mid-Cities town - that is, between Dallas and Fort Worth - where there's a branch of U of T, and Six Flags - the original - and now "the" baseball venue as well as "the" football stadium.) Probably responding from some sort of pressure from religious parents or a politically-correct gesture, the mayor declared that Saturday night October 30 was going to be Halloween that year, and it was going to start at like 5 pm when it was still light. Arlington had a cheesy little weekly newspaper that was usually left on people's lawns to get rained on and turn yellow, and that's where they announced it. So nobody knew. We were getting these dejected little bands of kids with indignant mothers coming to the door, saying "But it's Halloween" and I'm saying, "No, that's tomorrow" until I just turned off the TV and stopped opening the door.
Kbob, I agree, your town's Halloween sounds fabulous. I bet you get tourists even!
