Enjoy the parades? Not where I sit. I live two blocks away from the street where a parade takes place - not the official city one, it's a long street of restaurants, bars, and business, and it's a nightmare. I won't be able to go anywhere all day except west. and it'll take twice as long to get out of my neighborhood, for all the cars, cabs, and pedestrians. In the morning the pedestrians are just noisy, but after noon on their way home they'll be noisy drunks. A couple of years ago the city finally decided to put up No Parking This Side of Street signs all around the neighborhoods, hooray. Before that the streets were lined bumper to bumper and they wouldn't clear out till after midnight. Even with the No Parking, last year it took me half an hour to go a mile north on my street, at dusk. This parade is kind of makeshift and is largely - like a lot of American St Patrick's Day "celebrations" - is an excuse for getting plastered. I'm not a fan. No offense to my Irish friends.

I'm Irish (well, half Irish, anyway) and I take no offense at all. Our society does not need another excuse to get plastered.

Once I grew up I think I grew out of the parades and all that....Now I just enjoy getting the day off Or, as is the case this year, a Bank Holiday on Monday Fiona

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I'm all of one-eighth Irish--I celebrate by sending a few cards. In NYC, people celebrate by going to parades and drinking too much, and by eating corned beef and cabbage, which isn't even Irish.

Happy St. Paddy's Day from the great great great grand daughter of a Irish refugee of the great Irish potato famine. I celebrated today by indulging in homemade Irish potato soup, corned beef and a pint of Ireland's finest export, Guinness Beer.

That is so interesting, Di. I would love to study my ancestry. I think I'm your classic Heinz 57 breed, but I would love to know a lot more.
Everybody, I've enjoyed reading about all your different backgrounds. Thanks for sharing.
Dani, your little pics are adorable. What a cute touch for the theme of this thread.
My area doesn't do much for St. Patrick's Day at all, and I find that very surprising since I live just a couple of miles from the University of Notre Dame. Go Irish!!!
Happy St. Patrick's Day!
