I'm an avid crocheter. I love to crochet anything and everything... from doilies to afghans to bookmarks to clothing to you name it. I'm currently working on a fashion scarf that is very unique. I saw a picture of one in a catalog and thought I want that. Now, my mom and sister-in-law want one, too. I don't know if I want to make that many. We'll see. I suppose it depends on how much guilt they lay on me. I used to be. But one can only make use of and give away so many doilies and afghans, plus I inherited mom's when she passed. I can still crochet, just don't need to these days. But I did have a knack for being able to look at something and copy it, no pattern needed.

I don't crochet as much as I used to, because I don't know what to do with the projects once I've finished. Fortunately, several of my friends have chosen to reproduce recently, so I have good reasons to make baby afghans, as shower gifts, etc.

Thanks, Goldberry, for explaining all that to me. It actually sounds like a lot of fun. I could see that becoming completely addictive.

I have a couple hobbies. One is something I can usually only do once every year or two and the other is an "after work relaxation" type of hobby. I love to get in my car and travel. I visit mostly National Parks for some hiking (short hikes ... I'm not a backpacking type of hiker) and picture taking. Best trip, so far, was from the Atlanta area where I live to as far west as Lake Tahoe then down to Las Vegas then home again. I visited Rocky Mtn NP, Colorado Natl Monument, Arches, Canyonlands, Capital Reef, Bryce Canyon, Zion, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam, Monument Valley, Natural Bridges, Mesa Verde and, of course, Lake Tahoe. And I drove the neatest road called the Moki Dugway ... a gravel road down the side of a mountain (although I believe Danny would say it isn't a road since it isn't paved and doesn't have curbs). I took a tour to Mt. Charleston while I was in Las Vegas and (while the temp was already too hot to head over to Death Valley) we ran into a driving snow storm. From clear weather to heavy, good-packing snow in just 5 minutes! We actually had to stop short of our goal because the tour driver was afraid we'd get snowed in. While visiting Monument Valley, I hired a Navajo guide who took me to the top of a mesa just outside the Valley so we could look down on it. I seriously thought, at one point, that we were going to fall off the side of the mesa (the car was tilted quite precariously as he tried to navigate over some rocks). This past summer I flew out to San Francisco then drove north from there visiting Crater Lake, Mount Rainier, Olympic NP, Redwoods NP and Yosemite when I got back to SF. I also got over to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and up to Vancouver and Victoria, BC. I've been moved to tears just by standing and looking at a landscape unlike any I'd ever seen before. I think that's one reason I love to travel by car ... I don't want to say that I missed something along the way. And I have to say that I think it's totally UNFAIR that Utah is so blessed with such diverse National Parks! I've seriously considered moving West just so I could explore them even more. This year in early September I'm heading north / northeast from Atlanta to visit Shenandoah NP, Gettysburg, Niagara Falls and Acadia NP. By the time I get home, I'll have visited all 48 contiguous States. Then I'll just have to get to Alaska and HAWAII. My other hobby is painting pottery. I found a place on the way home from my office where you buy bisqueware to paint and then they fire it for you. I usually paint platters with pictures of scenery ... some realistic and some abstract ... but one of the most fun was painting four coasters so, if you placed them side-by-side, they were a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains (abstract). It's a really relaxing way to spend an hour or two and by the time I'm done, I've usually put any stress from my job behind me (at least until the next day ).

Holy Cow!! Katlyn, your travels sound amazing. I bet you have some beautiful pictures to remind you of these amazing travels. I would love to see pics of your painted pottery. I'm just in awe of the stead hand that a detailed painter has to have. It seems like the steadier I try to make my hand the more it shakes. I just can't win. I'm so tickled that you shared all that with us. You made my day. Thanks!
Goldberry, how do I know if The Sims program came with my computer? And, if it didn't, can I go to Best Buy and buy this particular program to download, or... Okay, I guess I'm asking how do I get The Sims on my computer? Please remember that you are talking to the board's #1 electronic dummy. Thanks!

I have a few pictures saved of my pottery. I usually make them to give away to someone specific. This is a plate I did for my brother and sister-in-law. They have a lighthouse / sail boat motif in their guest bedroom / bathroom and it was intended to match a candle they have. www.angelfire.com/tv2/theholdingpen/ART/Lighthouse_Plate01.jpgAnd these are the coasters I made for my nephew. Just sort of a sampling of the colors of the Blue Ridge. Some of the colors have washed together in the picture but there were actually four distinct colors in the mountains. www.angelfire.com/tv2/theholdingpen/ART/Coasters_for_Brian.jpgAnd this one wasn't fired when the picture was taken. I'm not sure I have a pic of the finished product. Someone asked if they could take a picture and I told him only if he'd send a copy to me so that's what I have. I painted it for a friend of mine who has a condo in Lake Tahoe and I spent a couple nights there before starting my trip home. The photo in the picture is one that I took as we were driving around the lake so I thought it would be a nice way to thank her for her hospitality. The first time I painted it, I got so carried away with the trees that I covered up Lake Tahoe! I had to wash it all off and start over. www.angelfire.com/tv2/theholdingpen/ART/Plate_Lake_Tahoe_01.jpg

Fellow Hobbyists, I would love to see any of your pics that you have of special things you've made or seen or do or whatever. I really enjoy getting to know you all more.

Katlyn those are beautiful. Have you ever thought of selling your work?

Thank you, Scarlarose and Biochemgeek! Haven't ever considered selling them. I usually take my time over them (my most recent, a plate for my nephew) took about 6 weeks to complete. It needs at least 3 coats of paint or it comes out looking like a watercolor. So I just take my time and pretty much paint each one 3x (except for something like the landscape where the layers give you the 3 coats you need). It's just a nice way to relax. I'd probably get too stressed if I thought someone was going to have to pay me for it.

Scarlarose, you would know if you had gotten it--it would have been a separate dvd in its own box. I doubt Best Buy has the original Sims anymore; your best bet is probably to find The Sims: The Complete Collection on Ebay.

Katlyn, you really are talented! I haven't run into anybody who does this kind of thing, I can see where it would be extremely gratifying, and to do things attached to significant places and events, very cool indeed. What lovely work. I'm impressed too.

WOW you all have very fascinating hobbies which make for a fulfilling life... The main thing that I do is bake. I have a tendency to change recipes especially sweets to be low fat and low in sugar as much as I can but still have a great taste I am known as the Cheesecake Queen amongst my family & friends....
I also love to read once I start and am enjoying the book I will finish it within a day or 2......
I am now looking into a couple of cooking classes that I want to take & some jewellery classes.... Am hoping I will find something that I like.....
@katlyn I have to say just like everyone else your paintings are amazing so lifelike....you are so talented...I am so very impressed....
It is so nice to be able to be a part of this board where there are so many talented people and it's been a pleasure knowing or getting to know you all.....
