Just wanted to let everyone know that the Daytona 500 NASCAR Race has been pushed back to 7pm tonight due to the rain they had down there yesterday and today. Hopefully this won't impact H50's ratings too badly, but I am afraid it might. If any one knows a rain dance now might be a good time to try it out in hopes of getting the race pushed back to Tuesday, so it won't be competing with H50 tonight.

Oh no that would be such bad luck coming off the improvement last week. Fingers crossed for more rain.

Who wants to watch a bunch of cars go around and around in circles. Boring. Especially when you can watch the Fab4 run circles around the criminals in Hawaii.

I get that you are being sarcastic but unfortunately you asked who would want to watch the race well the answer is myself, my family, and the other 15 million or so viewers that watch Daytona every year especially since the Daytona 500 is considered the Superbowl of NASCAR racing. And most of viewers also happen to live in mid-west and southern states where H50 is also a big ratings draw. And, it is not an either or it's a watch the race live because it is a live event where anything can happen and DVR H50 for later viewing scenario. Probably, what I will do is watch the race up until H50 comes on, because I have to DVR the race for my step-dad who works second shift anyway. Most people though won't be doing that as they will watch the race to the end, because they can watch H50 later on the DVR without any commercials.

I am not a NASCAR fan. That said however.......I will probably watch until H 5-0 comes on. I like watching Danica Patrick race. I'm old enough to remember when women did NOT race at all. Don't know for sure, but I think they didn't race because they weren't allowed to--I never questioned it when I was young. I just thought it was stupid that women weren't allowed. (Diana -you can probably speak to that since are a fan) So I secretly root for Danica when she races!!
And there will always be something that is on or happening that could interfere with watching H 5-0-----just have to hope enough people tune in to keep our ratings where we and TPTB want them.

Dianno, how long does the race normally last? Is there a chance that it will be over before 5-0 starts? I've never watched a race before so I don't know if it runs constantly or if the time varies like a basketball or baseball game. I'm sorry that I'm so dense about sports stuff.

Well, it could be worse....if the race was scheduled to be broadcast on CBS, it would pre-empt H50 altogether (and who knows when we would get to see it).....just like football, golf and tennis which delay/pre-empt Sunday night shows on CBS all the time.
Anyhow, sounds like it still might be too wet to race even by 7pm.

Actually, Danica will be the third women to start a race at Daytona. The other two were: Janet Guthrie (1977 & 1980) & Shawna Robinson (2002). As far as I know there has never been an out and out probation on women racing in NASCAR from NASCAR's point of view, but has occurred is that no high profile race team and/or sponsor (i.e., those with the big bucks) has ever been willing to sponsor a women driver until Danica Patrick. And it really hard to become a successful driver (male or female) unless you have major money backing you up. Truth be told, all levels auto racing starting with weekend dirt track racing which my step-dad is a former driver in are very expensive to participate in and it just gets more and more expensive the further up the food chain. The only that help in my step-dad's case is that he is a master mechanic so he was able to build his car and engine from the ground up himself. And, in case anyone is interested, yes I am intimately familiar with the differences between a tie-rod, a toe-in, a roll cage and various other components you find in a race car.

Technically, if they were able to run the whole race at race speed with no cautions then it should take 2.5 hours to run the race, but that never happens as there will always be a few cautions due to wrecks. So it all depends on how many cautions flag they have due to wrecks and how long they are. The other factor is if it starts raining and it not to the halfway point of the race then it is not considered a complete race. Then they will throw what is called a red flag which stops all racing until the rain stops and if it is just a brief shower then they will dry the track which can take 2-3 hours and then go back to racing if there is enough time left in the night.

Yes, Diana, I was definitely being sarcastic. I get that the 500 is big, my hubby watches it every year. But that's only because we know someone who races.

Diana --I remember Janet Guthrie-I think she used to race in Tucson in the 1980's. I just think it is cool that women are finally working their way up the food chain in a male dominated field and finding backers/teams willing to take that chance on a woman.
And as an aside. My husband will come into the living room and watch the race for a couple of minutes and then ask-why don't they ever turn right? Why are they always turning left.....? Just to yank my chain. He is such a goof sometmes!

I wanted to race sports cars for a while, way back when. There was a major racetrack here for a while (short while, it went bust) and I would go with the boyfriend and help a driver and work timing. The only woman driver at the time told me, "You don't buy clothes. You don't get your hair done. You don't go dancing. Just plan on spending every dime you have on the car and the fees, and you can do it too." Pop went that dream. Got over it though.

Runner -- I figured from your response that you got it. I was just trying to enlighten those on the board who don't follow racing and our overseas members about the significance of what the Daytona 500 can do to the ratings. I hope I didn't upset you. And just for the record according my DirectTV guide the race is scheduled to go to 12:30am tonight, which will put it in direct competition with H50, so get out the and do your rain dance.

When I was in graduate school in Tucson in the 1980's, I had a friend who worked for an ambulance company doing dispatch. Occasionally she would go to the races because they always have an ambulance on site in case there was a crash or a spectator became ill. She got the chance to chat up some of the drivers and crews and said it was a totally different world and the money that was required to maintain the cars was amazing.

Not at all, Diana. All is good. But you make a good point about overseas members. Regardless, I won't be watching the show until tomorrow, but would be totally bummed if the usual play-by-play wasn't happening in the Chat Room tonight.
