2012 Emmy Nomination Voting Underway.

The 2012 Emmy Nomination Voting is currently underway. For those who don't know what this is, it is where the Emmy voters decided on the top 5 or 6 vote getters that then go on to become the nominees that get voted on to determine who wins a primetime Emmy in the fall. Hawaii Five-0 cast and crew have submitted the following for consideration. Okay, before everyone gets too excited NONE of these are actually nominated for primetime Emmys yet, but thanks to director Larry Teng’s tweet earlier today, we know that they have been submitted for consideration, to be voted on by members the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in their specific categories. Thank you for the heads-up, Larry!

At the tail-end of this post is an explanation of how this all works – let me know if you have any questions about the process. I just want to make sure you understand, these are not nominations, they are submissions that Academy members now have to vote on, in order to move on to becoming nominations."

You may want to pop over there and read the explanation of how voting works, it's educational.

Last year, for whatever reason, Alex wasn't submitted for consideration. We have no way of knowing what specific person or entity does the submitting, or who can choose whether or not to submit. So don't get all excited about why DDK or Grace weren't nominated, or certain episodes, or guest stars. The guy who wrote the above may have gotten it from the HowStuffWorks web article, which he quoted from. There's also this:

"People who worked on eligible shows can nominate themselves for awards. Teams of people can enter in more than one category as long as each entry is for a different program. The entrants have to pay a fee, the amount of which is based on whether the nomination is commercial, individual or for a program, and the size of the team for team entries.

After the deadline for entries, ballots with all of the qualified entries are mailed to academy members. Each peer group member votes in his own category -- performers for performers, directors for directors -- and everyone votes in the program categories, such as best comedy series and best miniseries. The members send their marked paper ballots to an independent accounting firm, Ernst & Young, to be counted. The top vote-getters in each category -- usually five, but there can be fewer -- are then announced as the nominees."

So this is a lot like you submitting your cake for the Pillsbury Cook-Off. You have to put yourself forward - although in this case somebody else may do it with your permission - and then once you're in the running, the votes determine the nominations. (Obviously, you don't have to actually compete after that, you're judged on the work you've already done.) After the nominee list is created, there's a panel of volunteer judges - again in peer groups -who are supposed to watch the shows and make their decisions. I don't know how many judges there are. But they're the ones who determine the ultimate winners.

Now I could be wrong, but I believe that in addition to submitting one's name for consideration, you also have to submit a compilation of scenes representing your work that support the category you want to be considered in.. So in Daniel and Grace's case they may have decided that may not have had enough gut-wrenching scenes to show the depth of their acting ability last season to warrant them submitting themselves. Now I am sure we all can think of a reason why this might have been [cough] SWSNBN hogging all the scenes [cough], but let's try to keep the conversation on the topic at hand, shall we??
