I need assistance from the collective memory of H5-0 fans! Today I was showing a co-worker (a 5-0 fan) the picture of Gracie in the pink dress. And that prompted her to tell me that she’d never been able to figure out why Grace, as a small child, couldn’t say “ee” and it became “oo” … she said the whole “Danno” explanation never made sense to her. I told her that I didn’t think Grace was trying to say “Danny”; I thought she was trying to say “Daniel”. I’ve always thought she was trying to say “Daniel” because a child will often mimic their parent when addressing the other parent … they say what they hear. My baby book (from a loooong time ago) says I called my dad “Honey”, which is what my mother always called him. And I was witness to my 2-year-old nephew trying to get his father’s attention (after multiple utterances of “Daddy” didn’t work) by doing a perfect imitation of my sister (his mother) and calling his dad “BRUCE!”
So, knowing that it can be difficult for a young child to say that ending “L” sound (and with the personal experiences above), I’ve always figured that Grace tried to say “Daniel” (imitating Rachel, who always calls him “Daniel”) and it came out sounding more like “Dan-yo”, which morphed into “Danno.” HOWEVER, my co-worker insists that Danny actually told someone that she was trying to say “Danny” and it came out “Danno.” I think she’s been reading too much fan fiction because anytime a fanfic writer tries to explain it in their story they use “she tried to say Danny…” But, on the series, I only remember him telling Steve that Grace tried to say “my name” and all she could say was “Danno.”
We agreed to leave it to your collective recall. My co-worker said she liked my explanation … unless someone can provide us with evidence to the contrary. So I need your help to convince her (unless, of course, she’s right … in which case I’ll probably delay telling her until she forgets about it … LOL!). Does anyone remember Danny specifying that Grace tried to say “Danny” when “Danno” came out instead?
