Fall TV Analysis: The No. 1 TV Network Is Now The DVR www.tvguide.com/News/DVR-Analysis-1055015.aspxthink i'm in the right place for this. this is the trend over here in europe as well, since sky plus was brought in, more and more people are watching shows later instead of live, only difference is, you guys have some sort of device that can track those figures, which is a way is great, because it mean H50's numbers jumped.

Unfortunately, while we have the device that tracks it, the numbers mean less if they are DVR'-ed.
What people seem to gloss over, forget, etc. is that the ratings system exists for one reason and one reason alone: to determine the number of viewers per show for advertising purposes. It's not to see how the show is doing, or how popular it is: its about how much they can charge for ads.
DVR numbers don't carry as much weight, other than to give the average fan a lot of hope and glee that the numbers are going up. To the production companies and networks, those numbers are just feel good numbers that maybe eventually somebody will tune in at the real time. The fact is, on DVR, you can go past the commercials, and that therefore lowers the value of those numbers. The ones that truly indicate the renewal of the show...live numbers.

Then what is this talk that I see on some message boards about DVR +1 and DVR +2? I've seen people use these terms, but not explain what they mean.

TV by the numbers explains it best, if you want to call it that:
DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data Live, Live+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast. DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate
Generally it is DVR +7, which means that it is the live views, plus DVR viewings within 7 days of the broadcast. DVR +1 would mean those that are watched the next day. +2 would mean within 2 days of the original broadcast. The only numbers (and TV by the numbers mentions this) that mean anything towards renewal, are the numbers from the live broadcast.

Thank you for explaining that! It makes more sense now. People talked about DVR+1 and DVR+2 as if they counted as much as live numbers. Others said they didn't, so that is where I got confused.
