Gbird, it's typical to get the Friday after Thanksgiving off, and that's what gave rise to Black Friday. A long, long time ago retailers caught on that a lot of people were on the loose that day, a lot of whom thought, "Hey, why don't I get in some Christmas shopping while I'm off?" So they started having sales. That was a big hit, so they got more aggressive with it, with even bigger discounts on stuff that was in high demand, and extending their open hours. This year it's katie-bar-the-door, with stores not only being open on Thanksgiving Day but open all night too. This day is said to account for a huge percentage of retailers' sales for the entire year.
I think it's sad, personally. It's not bad enough that most of our holidays are commercialized, and a lot aren't even observed for their original intention - like Memorial Day. There's been an effort in recent years to overcome that but it's a steep hill to climb. Now Thanksgiving is barely set aside for a traditional meal with family, but a lot of people are deliberately planning to use it to buy more stuff they don't need, and give more stuff that people don't need, which will encourage more of the same, with no end in sight. And don't get me started on Christmas.
Having said all that, thank you gbird, and biochem, mandy and davila. And Happy Thanksgiving to everybody else - I am thankful for you and for having had this forum in my life. Have a good, good day no matter how you spend it.

It sounds much like Boxing Day over here, when I was young hardly any shops opened on Boxing Day. Now it is a massive day for sales to start , they are starting to open earlier and earlier or they start their sales online at midnight on Christmas Day .

Boxing Day is much the same here, and in the US as well. Personally I always hide at home on Boxing Day because the shopping centers are such a nightmare, with huge crowds and long lines to get into stores.
Despite the fact our Thanksgiving is in October, and we have never had a particular pre-Christmas sale day, Black Friday is now starting to make an impact in Canada. Some stores up here will be having extended hours and sales as well on your Black Friday, I think to try and combat cross-border and online shopping, and cash in a bit on the mania.

It's the same here for the first time this year the shops opened on Easter Sunday which is shocking...Gone are the days when we celebrated a holiday and the true meaning behind it...now it's all about the retail shops & making money...it's so sad....

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Whether you celebrate the day or not, I hope everyone has a wonderful day with family and friends. Bring on the pie!!!! The only reason I'm even attempting to go into town on Black Friday is because I have to deposit my husband"s check because he has to work. I also have to try to get wood shavings for my horse. Otherwise I wouldn't set foot near a store. I can't wait for Sunday though because we have a tradition of cutting down our own Christmas tree on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.
