Chris Ender CBS VP Communication Explains H50 moves to Friday Time Slot

Television history will tell you that a move to Friday is known as the “Friday Night Death Slot” and for the good number of H50 fans it can only mean one thing – the countdown to cancellation.
Les Moonves, CEO of CBS, during an interview at the Television Critics Association Press Tour addressed the why Five-0 is being moved out of its Monday night slot and heading to Friday nights says this Hawaii Five-0 skews a little older, so with Blue Bloods doing well, Friday has become more of a total demo night. It became pretty evident that putting Hawaii Five-0 there would be a good move.” That statement did not really explain a lot.
Maybe 5-0 fans are echoing the sentiments of Bones fans!
Fox network’s Bones is being moved to Fridays. Fans of the show say that according to Fox’s track record, shows that are moved to Fridays eventually die. Then again, Fox network argues that Bones has withstood every night of the week and that the move is the network’s appreciation of the “fortitude” of the show.
We wouldn’t move a show as important as Hawaii Five-0 if we did not think Friday was a good fit.
In an exclusive over the phone interview with Chris Ender, CBS Executive Vice President for Communications talks to H50 National Examiner.com, explaining why the move on Friday is important and strategically good!
Mr. Ender states that, “Networks on occasion need to move shows in order to ‘freshen up’ their scheduling and to make room for a new series. If you look back, CBS has a pretty good history with strategically moving shows around. We have moved CSI from Thursdays to Wednesdays, The Good Wife from Tuesdays to Sundays and The Mentalist from Thursdays to Sundays as well. We wouldn’t move a show as important as Hawaii Five-0 if we did not think Friday was a good fit. Hawaii Five – 0 is an important franchise to us. It is very popular internationally too. We have sold it in over 200 countries around the world and we have also sold the re-run rights to TNT, which will start in the fall. It is still an important show for us.”
Why is it a good move?
Enders explains, “We are still a network that considers Friday as an important night of the week. We have had good success with dramas on Friday in past, from Nash Bridges to Ghost Whisperer to Numbers and now Blue Bloods. If you look into our scheduling, we have a lot better success when scheduling dramas in two hour blocks. Criminal Minds with CSI, NCIS with NCIS LA. We really think that Hawaii Five-0, along with Blue Bloods, can form a very strong two hour block on a Friday night.”
Enders continues to explain the comment “skews a little older” made by Mr. Moonves. “I believe Mr. Moonves was referring to the audience of the show as being older, compared to the viewers of the comedies as seen by younger viewers that have been leading into it.” Hawaii Five-0 on Mondays was preceded by comedies - 2 Broke Girls and Mike and Molly. Mr. Enders explains further, “The median age of Friday night viewers for Hawaii Five-0 is 56 and the median age of the show preceding it, Undercover Boss, is 57. So we know that there is a compatible audience flow on Fridays from Undercover Boss to Hawaii Five-0 to Blue Bloods.”
As to the question of the show’s production value being moved on Friday nights, he had this to say, Hawaii Five-0 fans are guaranteed that the ‘picture postcard’ show will have the same outstanding production value as it did on Monday nights to its new time slot on Friday.”
Fans of today are more informed
Unfortunately with social networking, no one can control the flow of information – whether that information are spoilers or speculations, or whether the information is verified or unverified. It is easy to take things out of context. A network or the show runner’s inability to explain it does not help to satisfy the fans who want to know more.
While it will not be easy to sit out and wait for things to unfold each Friday night, most Hawaii Five-0 fans agree that its writers and show runner has been good with surprising twists and turns and a lot of “aha” moments. The loyal Hawaii Five-0 fans who are able to sit back and wait, no matter how long it will be, are learning to trust its writers to deliver a good show.
It is yet to be seen whether the Friday night move is strategically good for the show or not. One thing is for sure though…fans will once again be asked to “put your seat belts on (click it or ticket) and get ready to catch the wave” for the upcoming 24 explosive episodes.
