Borth is set to make her final appearance as McGarrett’s fellow team member and lover at the end of the show’s current fourth season.
In a recent interview with TVLine, exec producer Peter M. Lenkov shared that the second-to-last episode is a “big, dramatic” one for the lovebirds, featuring “some flashbacks to [Catherine's] stint in the military.”

I like Cat and Steve together too. I'm going to miss her. But I used to like her as McGarrett's girlfriend not as a member of Five-0. But since she's leaving I would love to see Sophia Myles to be a guest star. She could flirt with Steve. I think Sophia and Alex have great chemistry together and would be intersting watching them in a different role together. I wish Peter Lenkov could have this idea since a lot of people who worked with the actors in other series/play is coming as a guest star in Hawaii Five-0. I don't know if the other fans would like that, but I certainly would.

Oh no! I am really sad to see her go. Steve doesn't need any more loss in his life. I personally think that Catherine was his match in every way. My heart is sad tonight. Does anyone know what happened? Has Michelle Borth been offered a starring role in a new TV show? I wish her the best in the future and I will miss her character.

I've always been ambivalent about Catherine. When she was on only occasionally as Steve's friend with benefits (yes, both personal benefits and those that helped Five-0), I didn't mind her presence. I thought making her a member of Five-0 was going too far simply because her relationship with Steve changed (he was willing to admit that she was his girlfriend). I always thought a good role for her would have been permanently stationed at Pearl as someone who was authorized to assist Five-0 in providing the sort of intelligence she'd previously provided in a sort of covert manner; a military liaison with the Governor's task force since Five-0 assisted at times with military matters.
I think they painted themselves into a corner with her when they made her part of Five-0 and while I'm not happy to see her go, I'm also not sad to see her go. I sorta just really don't care.

I think the problem came when Grace Park wanted time off to have a baby. They need a leading women on the team with the boy's. So they went and messed up Catherine roll in the navy. Then gave her that silly job with billy then killed billy off. Then put her on the team and it worked until Kono came back on to the team, and the writers forgot about Cath and they did not know what to do with her character and not give her much time on screen. So I think Michelle got fed up at Christmas time and told Peter she wanted to leave I guess. Really sad that Michelle is going, I am getting less interested in five0. I will properly watch till the end of the season and see how they write out Cath character hoping they don't kill her off. And see how Steve deals with it. As Alex is my fav actor I might still watch. As far as I know Michelle is looking for another TV Show where she is on more.

This is a mistake....I'm hoping that they don't kill her off. It would be nice if she would make the occasional visit back to the islands. Also--what are they going to do about Steve's love life? For 4 seasons he and Cath had a thing going...are they going to introduce yet another female character in addition to all the men they have added as regulars??

Am not surprised. There just wasn't enough for her to do, as Five-0 does not need a 5th member. Her character was better utilized as a recurring (instead of a regular) with her in the Navy.
TVLine's attempt at being funny fell flat, as Steve's nickname for her is 'Cath' not 'Cat'.
Agree that they should not kill her off, because Steve has had too much of that in his life already.

Catherine was hardly ever on when you first became interested in it and giving it up because she became a regular and is now leaving sounds like you forgot what first interested you about the show. No MIGHT about it ... you have to keep watching! We'll miss you around here if you give up on it just because one character leaves. I hope she finds something else. Personally I'd have waited 'til I knew I had something in the bag before I told the boss I wanted to leave (insecure that way) but I'm sure once TPTB elsewhere know she's looking, there will be interest.

Hi Katlyn thank you for the kind words. I am just a bit upset at the moment about how the programme is going about writing Cath off, and the writers forgetting about Cath in the last few episodes. I hope we get to see Steve deal with what every happens to Cath as I think Alex will do a good job.

They are making anybody and everybody a regular but getting rid of Cath who has been part of Steve's life since season one. So stupid. They messed up her character when they took her out of the Navy and made her part of the team. I personally don't want to see Steve dating anyone else. Steve is a one woman guy - not a player. They make her a regular then ditch her. Just like they dropped the ball with the role of Mary. Could have been so much more. Really disappointed in the direction of the show.

Characters, even series regulars, come and go all the time on “Hawaii Five-0,” so news of Michelle Borth’s departure after the current season shouldn’t really surprise anyone. Borth plays Catherine Rollins, the love interest for lead character Steve McGarrett. She’s been on the show since the first season and was promoted to series regular in the third season. TV gossip bloggers trumpeted the news Thursday and fans debated reasons behind her leaving all day on Twitter. CBS officially confirmed it Friday, but did not say why. Fans even got snippy with “Five-0” Executive Producer Peter Lenkov. Because Borth argued with some fans last season via Twitter, some fans felt they had argued loud enough to get her booted from the show. Lenkov rejected that on Twitter Friday, telling one fan who said he did not have, ahem, big enough stones: Peter M. Lenkov @plenkov : @dodosparadise I'm sorry, I love our fans, but with all due respect, stories are NOT dictated by their love or hate of a character. The storyline was built two years ago, Lenkov tweeted. Leni @daveleni : @plenkov @ilse_Futbolista @dodosparadise Is it dictated by the love or hate of the actress? It sure looks that way. No disrespect.
Peter M. Lenkov @plenkov : @daveleni @ilse_Futbolista @dodosparadise It might look that way 2 u... but I'm afraid that's NOT the case. Storyline was built 2 yrs agoBut Lenkov also vowed — again, via Twitter — that “Cath doesn’t die. I promise.”

So it seems like they might be leaving the door open for Cath to come back. Still don't understand why they made her a regular knowing they would get rid of her in two years. Doubt that was planned that way. They should have kept her in the Navy. Not too impressed with this decision.

I do find it hard to believe that the story line was set 2 years ago. They should have kept Catherine in the Navy and only a recurring role.

Peter could well be telling the truth when he says that the storyline was mapped out 2 years ago - up to a point. I suspect that any showrunner worth his/her salt has exit storylines worked out as a Plan B for all the main characters, just in case the actor wants to leave, has to leave, or becomes an embarrassment (or their character becomes unpopular). So that bit could well be true, after a fashion.
However, if this exit was indeed a Plan A as he's implying, and not a Plan B, then why dial back Cath's character so much in recent episodes? Surely if the plan was always to get rid of her (heroically, we assume), then why not make a big thing of how devoted she and Steve are to one another, to increase the impact of her departure?
