Season 4 of Hawaii Five-0 was full of ups and downs. Catherine (Michelle Borth) was part of the team, but Kono (Grace Park) was MIA for a much of the season. Danny (Scott Caan) was in and out. Lou Grover (Chi McBride), a Honolulu Police Department SWAT captain, was introduced, and so was Chin’s (Daniel Dae Kim) old high school buddy Jerry Ortega (Jorge Garcia). Then Catherine left Steve (Alex O’Loughlin)—and the show—and Lou joined the team. Kono came back, and Jerry is sticking around.
All of this back-and-forth is enough to make anyone’s head spin. But throughout all of these changes, there’s always been one constant for this show, and that’s the importance of TV’s favorite bromance, McDanno. The Steve/Danny relationship has always been the rock of the show, and if the first-look clip of Friday’s premiere is any indication, that relationship is not going anywhere anytime soon.
As part of a mandated psychological review, Steve and Danny are headed to therapy—together. And it is just as glorious as one would imagine when reading that sentence. They get to vent their issues (why must Steve always drive Danny’s car?), and they even find the one thing they agree on: Their team is ohana.
We have a little time to wait before the therapy sessions (and the rest of the season) begin, so to tide you over in the meantime, here are six of the best McDanno-heavy episodes from the past four seasons.
“Pilot,” season 1, episode 1
Our boys meet for the first time when Steve forces Danny to join his newly formed (and yet-unnamed) task force. Punches are thrown, shots are fired (literally and figuratively), and nothing would be the same after Steve uttered “Book ’em, Danno” for the first time.
“Mana’O,” season 1, episode 8
Danny’s old partner at HPD, Meka, is murdered and accused of being a dirty cop. Steve and Danny’s partnership grows deeper when Steve trusts Danny’s instincts and helps to prove Meka’s innocence. The guys prove that they trust each other on and off the clock. And when the whole Five-0 team shows up to Meka’s funeral in their dress blues, you are hit with some serious ohana feels.
“Ua Hiki Mai Kapalena Pau,” season 1, episode 23
As made obvious from the remainder of this list, the boys are at their best when one (or both) of them is in mortal danger. Danny is accidentally poisoned while working a case, and the rest of the team races to find out how to save him before it’s too late. Meanwhile, Danny’s daughter, Grace (Teilor Grubbs), spends some time with Uncle Steve while Danno is in the hospital. The Five-0 team saves the day, Danny recovers, and the partners share a grateful, if slightly awkward, hug.
“Ki’ilu,” season 2, episode 10
Steve heads to North Korea—yes, that part of Korea—to help Jenna (Larisa Oleynik) rescue her fiancé. Unsurprisingly, Steve gets captured. Danny and the rest of the team have to save their fearless leader before they are captured too. The look on Steve’s face, post-torture and -trauma, when he sees Danny came for him—and Danny’s look of relief upon finding Steve—is all you really need to see to understand their relationship.
“I Ka Wa Mamua,” season 3, episode 6
In arguably one of the best episodes of the series, Danny is trapped in the sights of a bomb. And since Steve and Danny have to do everything together, Steve stands right beside him and makes Danny tell him stories of the good ol’ days back in Jersey. There are tears and totally sincere hugs and hysterical, verge-of-death laughter. It’s Hawaii Five-0 and McDanno at their best.
“Ku I Ka Pili Koko,” season 4, episode 19
If this were a Friends episode, it would be “The One Where They Say ‘I Love You.’” Steve and Danny are trapped together in a building collapse. Things are looking grim for the partners. Danny is rocking a pretty serious internal injury and his convenient claustrophobia is hitting him hard. Steve MacGyvers a pipe bomb to free them, and there are more hugs and crying; legitimate “I love yous” are exchanged. Shippers around the world (yours truly included) rejoiced, and the McDanno relationship continues to thrive.
