They may have tied with Masterchef Jr in the number of 18-49 year olds watching but overall they had more than twice as many viewers. Since ratings are used to estimate the number of "money spending" viewers and therefore how much they can charge for ads, it's kind of unrealistic to lump 18 year olds (i.e., college aged) in with people more than twice their age (i.e., people who've been working for 20-30 years longer). As just a small sample, the 25-54 age group shows a higher percentage of viewers watching H5-0 than either of the age groups that bring in the college-aged viewers. I think the networks are probably sophisticated enough in their analysis to realize that older viewers of "today" are different than older viewers of "yesterday" (i.e., a generation or two ago) and they interpret the data differently now than they would have then. I'm not sure they always look at the "rating" as opposed to the number of viewers overall and in the various different age brackets that they have access to.
