I wonder if some of you lovely people would be kind enough to advise me on how to get the smoke smell out of the kitchen. My own advice: don't leave chocolate chip cookies in the microwave for 4 minutes.
Small apartment, window unit in the front, kitchen and dining area invisible with smoke (no fun to breathe). It took an hour with the front door open, and that's no fun either. Got little fans going, now it's just the nasty smell hanging around, blech.
Ideas?

an ionizer- it's a little machine that purifies the air Honestly, if the smoke was too bad, you might need to call your insurance agent. They can put you up in a hotel until they have your apartment all cleaned out. I've never lived in an apartment so I don't know if there are any regulations that you have to follow. Our insurance company got in touch with a company that brought in gigantic machines that ran all week sucking in the smoke and the leftover smell. They also replaced the microwave because everytime we opened it the smell engulfed the entire kitchen again. The only thing we paid for was our deductible and the wasted bowl of macaroni and cheese.

Margarine, you're supposed to eat chocolate cookies, not try to inhalate them ..... Seriously, there are a few things you can try to get rid of the smell. OK what can I recall about grandmothers advices? First, you need to clean your whole kitchen, cups, plates, the shelves, pretty much everything because the smoke is laying on them like dust. Don't forget to wash all textiles. Textiles love to take on smells. After that you can cook up some water with vinegar (smells bad I know but it helps). Let it boil for a few hours (you can use some water with vinegar to clean your kitchen as well). Other Tips would be to light some candles (don't ask me why but it works with bad smells on the toilet too) Try roasting some coffee, cinnamon or bay leafs (pretty much anything that you like and contains a lot of essential oils). But do it cautiously! It doesn't get rid of the smell, but at least it overrides the bad smell til the air clears. And keep up the airing .... Hope I could help you ....

margarine I would go with what twassbrake has recommended.....I have used lavender or rose oils....they tend to overpower other smells.......the vinegar in the water is good also........and have the windows open as much as you can while doing the cleaning...once finished with the cleaning leave the windows open......place a bowl of water and vinegar in the microwave dont press anything just leave the bowl in there to get rid of the burning smell....otherwise anything you put in there to heat up or cook will have a burnt smell to it...........Hope this helps.......

Margarine, I was wondering if your apartment has recovered from the smoke yet? And, I was hoping you didn't get sick from it all. Let us know, please.

Actually, I was about to send a thank-you for the advices, we got smart people here. It wasn't so bad as to permanently damage anything, except maybe the microwave itself, that's still smelly - and yellow on the inside - bleach didn't help that any, at least so far. It was only nauseating that first day, while the actual smoke was dispersing, so I spent that in the bedroom reading. Much improvement has been made, vinegar and coffee are great things. A lot of improvement by wiping the countertops with vinegar, and today was the cleaner's monthly visit, so more stuff got cleaned, and all is swell. Thank you, scarlarose, twassbrake, and sweetlikemeli! You are da best!

Your so very welcome......If you still can't get rid of the smell from the microwave you might need to invest in a new one.....but keep doing the bowl with the vinegar in there for a few more days then see how you go......

vinegar is great. I usually add a splash of it to my wash, and if anything is really stinky (think gym socks), vinegar takes away the sweat and other odourss.

Update: things are coming along nicely! First the vinegar and Windex on some of the surfaces helped, then getting the place cleaned properly, and yesterday I boiled some eggs and dumped a lot of vinegar in and then left it there after taking the eggs out (it made them look really strange), and now there's barely any smell left! Microwave is better but looks awful, but that's oooo-kay. Not that bad. And spraying Febreze around some porous places like cardboard boxes helped too.
Thanks again, everybody! This thread is now complete.
