This might seem like a strange request, but as ya'll know, I volunteer at my local Domestic Violence Shelter. The Technology Safety handout that we have is from 2003. I really need to update it.
I'm going to list a few safety precautions for people fleeing DV for online safety, however, if any one of you can think of something else, (I'm brand new to Twitter, so I could really use some help there.) I would be very grateful!
This is just the start of the list I will add to it as I think of things and as ya'll suggest things.
If you post pictures taken with a smart phone make sure that the location device is turned off or on 911 only.
Do not post where you are on facebook, email lists, message boards, twitter, etc.
Don't tell anyone over the internet where you are. You never know who you are talking to. It could be your abuser under a disguised name.
If you can hide your IP address, do it. There are programs that do this. It might be a good idea to invest in one. Your IP address can lead your abuser to you.
This is all I can think of at this moment. (I'm not even looking at my handout sheet that I'm updating right now. Nor am I looking at the privacy settings on Facebook.)
Anyway, if you know of any others, please let me know. If this isn't allowed to be on this board, mods, please accept my apology and delete this post.
