I am looking to buy a dutch/french oven and am wondering if any of you out there in H5-0 forum land know a good brand to buy-or what brands to stay away from. While I would love to buy a top of the line dutch/french oven (Le Creuset comes to mind) --the old budget just won't allow for that. Any and all info is welcomed ....Thank you!!
And by the way--I don't know what the difference is between a dutch oven and french oven--so if anyone knows the answer to that I would appreciate that, too! )

I'm sorry that I don't know the difference between Dutch and French ovens. I've never even heard of a French oven so you've taught me something there. Got me interested!
However, we had some very interesting tests run on several different pots and pan sets a few years back. I wish I could remember how they did it. We had a professional guy that did this for a living come in and ran tests using different amounts of water and salt (I think). We found that teflon pots and pans such as T-Fal and Caphalon (sp?) were very bad for you to the point that they added toxic air to your home, and if the pans were chipped or older, then there was a possibility of an aluminum problem. Most people aren't as sensitive as I am, but I still thought this was good to know. I'm sorry that I don't remember all the details. I do know that since that time we've only used surgical stainless steel pans, and I've never gotten sick from them. I'm not saying that if you use anything else you will get sick, please understand, I'm just saying that someone like me who is ultra sensitive is better with surgical stainless steel pans.
Sometimes, Kohl's will run a great sale on their appliances and kitchenware, etc. They also do a deal where if you spend $50 you get $10 back in Kohl's money.

Scarla- thanks for the info. I am going shopping tomorrow and will probably just look. These things cost a chuck of change-so I like to do lots of comparison shopping before I take the plunge. Kohl's is one of the places I plan to stop. We'll see what's out there!

Wikipedia says French ovens and Dutch ovens are the same thing, it's just a couple of French manufacturers call theirs French.

I looked at some Le Cruset at the weekend, wow it has always been expensive but it seems to have shot up in price a lot recently.
