I hope season 3 focus more on the story and character development and bring in the classic series elements rather then some mindless action stuff Hate to burst that bubble but I'm pretty sure we're unlikely to see "classic series elements" in the new H5-0. Today's audience, in general, doesn't want to see that ... and those who do can always watch the original's DVDs. Mostly, the O-riginal is just too tame by current standards. I guess so. Still wished season 3 will do better

No I don't want it to be exactly like the 80's version but it can keep some of it's format. If you had the power to do it, what aspects of the original's format would you want to bring into the reboot in an effort to help the ratings? Or what would you change about the reboot to help the ratings?

Actually, the a large amount of the fans of the original actually bailed on this show last season, hence the reason why the demographic for this show is skewed as compared to its actual ratings.
Now, to reinforce what katlyn was saying, honestly, there has been a lot of character development in this show, there have been explorations into other crimes other than murder, and there have even been large scale homages to the show, that kept it fresh. The original format is long gone, and very dated, but even back then, it was an action show. In the 70's, it was car chases, and bang bang, in the 80's, it was bang bang, and talking cars flying through the air, in the 90's, it was bang bang, and science fiction, and in the early 00's, it was bang bang, and how much bigger the bang can get. This show is actually very current with the modern scene, especially with movies like the Avengers and Transformers hot at the box office. The original would be beyond dated right now, but Lenkov is still bending over backwards to include some elements of the show, and trying to meld it with the modern one. It's not going to go all the way, people would abandon the show faster than falsies off Lori's chest. It might not hurt to actually acknowledge the aspects that are making it into the show.

I'm drawn to H50 by the characters and their chemistry. In S1, and late in S2, H50 has been exceptional in this regard. Too much Lori and too much Joe trashed the chemistry to the point that I didn't want to watch (but I still did). Many may have stopped watching and not been fast to come back. Showing re-runs with Lori was a disaster. I wish they had gone back to S1 for re-runs (not sure it that was even an option). Let’s hope for a strong S2 finish and the writers having the wisdom to do what works. They need to continuously experiment or the show will get stale, but they should do it judiciously and with a lot of thought.

The new show isn't really a remake of the original. It's a new show built on the foundation of the old. I think its quite a task to do what they are doing and I commend them for a pretty good job.

I like the reboot better than what I've seen of the original, but I still like seeing the original come into the reboot. (like Jack Lord's car, Mamo, Duke, etc)

I was around when the original was first shown and it was, for most of its run, a 'must see' show. Maybe because I've seen most of the episodes or maybe because it now seems dated, when it's on MeTV, it can easily be just background noise. Not something I have to keep an eye on to really know what's going on. My attention is much more focused when the reboot is on. I find the characters more engaging; I feel like we're more encouraged to like them. I enjoy the Butch and Sundance, Starsky and Hutch relationship of Steve and Danny more than the boss / employee relationship of the original.
I don't mean to take anything away from the O-riginal (as MeTV calls it). For its time, it was something I always watched. And I love seeing the touches of the original now in the reboot ... the car, the picture on the wall of Steve's office, August March (and the clips of the original they were able to use), other actors who were in the original showing up in the reboot, and Wo Fat! But give me a choice today of watching a rerun of S1 of the original and the reboot and I'll take the reboot. My tastes have evolved.

I feel the ratings are usually affected by what's come before. Many of the proceeding episodes were dismal imo and eventually viewers get fed up and stop watching. I don't watch NCIS.LA either so I had no interest in those episodes. I think the ratings remained steady for those eps because of the NCIS fans tuning in.
The ratings have dropped because overall season 2 has been pretty disappointing in the writing department. I didn't feel Lori was the issue but she was a product of poor writing which still plagues the show. I think Lori was singled out more by online fans because she interferred with the McDanno more than the fact that she suffered from bad writing, just as all the characters have.
Out of the 10 millions viewers I'm sure that many watch for other things besides the Steve/Danny moments and most likely had no problem with Lori. What they had a problem with and was the lack of decent storytelling and the poor writing.
The second half of the season suffered even more in this department and for me I only found one or two episodes enjoyable. The writing seemed even worse in the 2nd half and the show suffered from low energy due to the health problems of Alex O' Loughlin and then his absence. He imo brought the energy and vitality to the show and it was sorely missed when he wasn't around or when he wasn't in top form.
Episode 2.10 and 2.16 and the recent 2.22 were the highlight of the season. I read a recent article about the overall ratings and they are not deemed all that great. They only need to drop a little and the show could be in jeopardy.
I really hope things improve next season and we get better writing and a more cohesive season.

The original is not beyond dated right now. The show focused on the crimes committed and how the characters went about solving them, rather than personal side-stories. It got high ratings in reruns and DVD sales, and does have a following with younger viewers. The plot and character elements it had which made it popular were an issue of writing, which is based on what the writers and producers think will work. There are people today who don't care for the type of writing which is popular today - emphasisizing characters' personal lives and problems rather than their work. It's a matter of the producers acknowledging that and working it into their shows. It's not about what's dated - meaning, what elements signify the time during which it was made - but just in what trends are popular. They can do a show with the same elements the original had: focusing on the cases the team is working on, the criminals, and how and why they commit their crimes. That's not a notion that is extremely dated. The only things that have changed which would not be workable now was the technology the characters used, the fashions, cars, and some of the political/social issues covered back then, the last one point being things which have either been resolved or have paved the way for other bigger problems.

But give me a choice today of watching a rerun of S1 of the original and the reboot and I'll take the reboot. My tastes have evolved. Maybe because, like you say, you saw it when it was originally on, you saw it all before and don't feel the need to see it again, but this was not a show where you don't need to pay attention to know what's going on. Because people have that attitude towards the original show, they think they can dismiss the acting and writing and say that it wasn't all that good. It's not all gunfights, car chases, and explosions, with nothing in between. There was dialogue, drama, and character study going on which the viewer has to pay attention to in order to understand the storyline. I think that is the problem some people who criticize the original series have: they didn't pay attention to what was going on, then they complain that the show was "boring," or make it sound as though they did pay attention but still criticize the storylines - calling it predictable, formulaic, the acting was overdramatic, or awkward, etc. (all things I've read people say). There was nothing about the storylines that were predictable or forumulaic. This was not a show done in the style of whodunnits, where a crime is committed, and the detectives go through five suspects, focus in on one, and then find out they had the wrong person and some clue turns up to point to the real culprit. That was a theme done to death on many shows. The original Five-O used that plot device in one episode. Steve and Danno were not just employer/employee. They were mentor/protegee, friends, and as close as brothers. When one talked, the other listened. They respected one another, and one was injured, or risking death, the other dropped eveything to help him, even risking his own life in the process. When Danno was accused of shooting an unarmed man in two different episodes, and framed for the murder of a third in another, Steve pulled out all the stops to clear Danno's name, and never doubted him. When Danno was kidnapped in another episode, and the kidnappers threatened to kill him unless the government met their demands, Steve was told by the higher-ups that they could not give in. Steve said that Danno knew what he was getting into when he signed on to become a cop, and knew the odds of him getting into danger, but then Steve turned around and emphatically told the government officials that he wasn't going to cower and give in to kidnappers. He was determined to get Danno back, even if the state of Hawaii wasn't going to back him up. That goes beyond the boundaries of an employer/employee relationship.

I wanted to put in my 2 cents here. The original series, which I was around for, was the be all for it's time period. There will always be certain elements from the original that the reboot can draw from. That being said, let's look at the reboot:
H50 for the 2010-beyond has been rebooted and redone to appeal to the modern audience. TPTB have done a great job at making the show what it is. I in no way want to downplay any influence the original may have on the new H50, however as has been stated by PL and others this show is new and fresh.
The leave that AOL took for his rehab/shoulder issues may have come at a somewhat "bad" time, however they made it work and Alex coming back when he was able made the final two episodes fantastic. The other regulars of the show took the bull by the horns and did a fantastic job without AOL there, though they did make numerous references to him.
I personally started watching the show due to AOL, but after the first episode of season 1 I began watching it for ALL of the characters be they regular or reoccuring. IMHO I think that PL and others learned a few things with the LoriFiasco and will hopefully not make Catherine a "follow McG around like a lost puppy waiting to be patted". They have shown Cath as a strong woman in her own right that can "handle" McG with ease.
I will remain a loyal fan of the show no matter who they bring on board, I may B P and moan about some of it but I will always remain respectful of the actors who portray the characters.
This show will always be more about the bromance and ohana to me than the special effects or bad guys. The sense of family and true friendship is what makes this show what it is. For a show to be renewed as early as H50 was is telling in that the show IS hot and CBS was smart to get the ball rolling as soon as they did. Season 3 will answer some long overdue questions and will leave us, as with the past 2 seasons, impatiently waiting for next week. ;D

Honestly, I think everyone is comparing apples and oranges, by trying to debate the old versus the new. The realty is that both show are good shows, that have elements in them that are geared to appeal to the 18-34 year olds (Advertiser favorite demo to sell stuff too, not saying it is right but that is a debate for another thread) of their times. If you were 18-34 years old in the 1970s then you are probably going to have a preference for the Original as it had more elements geared for your generation, if you are 18-34 in 2012 your preference is probably going to be for the new one. That doesn't make one better than the other it just makes them different in order to appeal to different generations, so there is no point in trying to compare the two.

They have shown Cath as a strong woman in her own right that can "handle" McG with ease. But that's what Danny does. Follows Steve around and complains about everything the does. I find that just as annoying as Lori following Steve around. I like a balance between the two. I love the action and the special effects because carguments and bantering are not enough. I didn't get the sense of any real ohana this year though. Dany just seemed kinda childish and his over the top reaction to everything Steve does is getting old and tiresome.
