Honestly, I think everyone is comparing apples and oranges, by trying to debate the old versus the new. The realty is that both show are good shows, that have elements in them that are geared to appeal to the 18-34 year olds (Advertiser favorite demo to sell stuff too, not saying it is right but that is a debate for another thread) of their times. If you were 18-34 years old in the 1970s then you are probably going to have a preference for the Original as it had more elements geared for your generation, if you are 18-34 in 2012 your preference is probably going to be for the new one. That doesn't make one better than the other it just makes them different in order to appeal to different generations, so there is no point in trying to compare the two.
I totally agree. I also don't think you can say which audience is keeping the show on the air either or why they tune in. Out of the millions who watch I'm sure there are a huge variety of reasons why viewers keep watching, or switch off.
I preferred the first half of the season and Lori didn't bother me as much as the poor writing and boring plots that plagued the 2nd half. I felt the show lost all its momentum in the 2nd half and the writing and plots got steadily worse.
I didn't enjoy the show without Alex because I felt it lost its energy without him and the dynamic wasn't the same. I would have stopped watching if I hadn't been aware he was returning. But many who don't frequent online forums had no idea when he would be back or had possibly already given up on the show because of the lacklustre 2nd half, thus possibly causing the ratings to remain low even when the quality did pick up considerably.
I think if the ratings are to improve next season, the writers need to be alot more consistant with their story telling and the overall writing needs to improve. We need more follow up to what the characters have been through and more depth to their relationships.
Out of the entire season I really only enjoyed 4 episodes and I've heard many say the same. This is why casual fans don't come back and this is who tptb need in order to keep the show on the air. The hardcore fans will usually keep watching even if they don't like what they are getting, but the casual fans will just switch off.
