I don't know how much consideration CBS gives to Smash being new. Yeah, couldn't also be because it was a pilot? Maybe people got interested and wanted to check it out. If it is of any consolation, Smash did not earn many positive reviews here (the episode was online before the actual TV broadcasting).

This has me worried. I was really hoping the ratings would be higher because I thought the promo was especially intense. I just thought that surely it would pique more interest, maybe even fans that had stopped watching because of Whori.

Me to but I'm not in panic mood yet just wait and see if Smash can do this good next week.

Do you think Lenkov had a feeling this would happen, that is why he mentioned that he would like to move the time slot earlier? Nah,he was just wanting to have more of the younger demographic tune in. That wasn't even a serious comment. Not to mention, the Voice would kick H50's ass. It's NBC's DWTS.

The biggest concern is not necessarily that Smash beat Hawaii Five-O's ratings. It's the fact that it took such a large amount of the live audience away from Smash during a Sweeps airing. CBS doesn't look at what beat it, they look at the how. Even if Smash tanks it and bites it next week, it already did one week's worth of damage. If it even takes half the amount it did this week, it could still drop H50 into the danger zone again.

Darksea, can I go out on a limb here and ask you for your gut feeling here. I realize you might have to come back and tell me that you can't do that, but I'm just wondering... are you worried? Do you think we should be worried, or do we have reason to feel confident or at the very least hopeful about a season 3? You know me, I'm always looking for a pat on the shoulder and to hear that everything's going to be okay.

Well, in Canada people chose H50 over "Smash" by +27%......I knew I liked our neighbors to the north for a good reason Global's Hawaii Five-0 Outperforms Series Premiere of Smash Canada NewsWire TORONTO, Feb. 7, 2012 /CNW/ - Monday night was a ratings hit for Global as its primetime lineup soared. Hawaii Five-0 won its time slot nationally (2+) with more than 1.7 million viewers, beating out the series premiere of Smash (1.4 million) on CTV by 27%. The performance of Global's popular drama was so strong that it also won its time slot nationally in the Adults 18-49 demo, and owned the hour in all four key metered markets (2+, Adults 18-49).

Too bad Canada's ratings don't mean crap to CBS who owns the show. Just like the international ratings don't.
Now, I had to take some time to truly formulate my answer, scarlarose. Because I didn't want to just go off my emotions, and wanted to give a succinct answer.
It's difficult to give a reaction to how much Hawaii Five 0 is in trouble off of a premiere vs. an established show with a problem fungus on it. A lot of people tuned in to Smash because it had been hyped since October, and of course, it has a powerful lead-in. Until we see what happens after the second episode of Smash, it's a lot of speculation at this point.
My feeling: you could potentially see Hawaii Five O moving away from Monday night. There is already some stir and buzz that this is exactly what is going to happen. It got reamed by a chick-show, and it was already hurting from Monday Night Football. If they get rid of the ratings leech, and go back to the winning formula, then they may be able to surge back up, but I have doubts.
The reality is, Hawaii Five 0 took a hit this year. They dragged things (and I don't just mean the scene whore) and the overall quality of the writing nosedived. The majority of people don't complain, they just turn the channel, and now that there is an actual viable alternative that isn't bang bang shoot em up, and definitely aimed at the largest part of the Hawaii Five 0 audience...female of a certain demographic, this could be a big problem. What saves Hawaii Five O's butt at this point is the fact that even at its worst, it performs better than most station's average shows. And that gives it a chance to be able to reinvent itself, move itself to a better place, and to come back. Eventually, people will tire of Smash, because it is going to be the same ol Fame/Cabaret crap week after week, and it will get old. In the meantime, our show just needs to hang in there and be prepared to move into a better slot.

Here's another interpretation of the "Smash" ratings from TV Addict.com: By Tiffany Vogt, Feb. 9, 2012 Everyone is citing NBC’s new series SMASH as a great example of securing a large viewership, but when you analyze its time slot, it merely picked up what was available. SMASH airs Mondays at 10 p.m. up against CASTLE and HAWAII FIVE-0. Typically, viewership declines for the 10 p.m. time slot as viewers, who have to get up early for work the next day, go to bed. So instead of the 45 million “pie,” it now drops to about 30 million. With CASTLE and HAWAII FIVE-0 each claiming about 10 million viewers each, that only leaves about 10 million available viewers. So SMASH debuted at 11.5 million, with CASTLE drawing 9 million and HAWAII FIVE-O its usually 10 million. Headlines were quick to proclaim SMASH an instant hit, but really, that was the expected number of viewers it was supposed to draw. That was the available number of viewers.
I agree with Darksea, the novelty of "Smash" will wear off and it will grow old very quickly. However, I do think H50 could benefit from a better time slot (and better writing and of course, no LW).

I really liked the suggestion awhile back by Darksea, I think, that the show move to Tuesday nights after NCIS: LA, taking Unforgettable's spot. If the show had to move nights, I think that would be the perfect spot.

Well, right after POI is The Mentalist, another one of my favorite shows. The Mentalist performs rather well, as far as I've seen. Do you think they would move The Mentalist to a different night if it's doing well as is?
