I don't have exact numbers yet (will have them posted as soon as I do), but it appears as though we have a problem in that H50 appears to have come in second in the ratings last night behind NBC's new show Smash. Castle came in third.
I really hope Lori goes after the next episode as it appears as if H50 is going to need every trick in the book to up their game, especially once DWTS returns in March to give Castle a leg up in the ratings. It appears as though NBC just got competitive at 10pm on Mondays and made it a 3 way dog fight.

I watched Smash on demand this morning and it was good. Now the target audiance may be different, but I am a Theatre Rat so, it appealed to me. I will never stop watching H50, but I can see where Smash will give it a run. I think Castle has more to worry about. Perhaps Peter will have to give into his female audiance and remove some shirts afterall. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Considering that NBC spent over $25 million dollars promoting this show, I am not surprised that people tuned in.
From the NY Times:
Estimates are that NBC has spent as much as $25 million promoting “Smash,” a new series that the network hopes will be the hit it desperately needs.
Smash had 11.5 million viewers last night....that means they spent $2.17 per viewer in advertising $$. Wow.

We'll see how Smash holds up. Some people may have tuned in out of curiosity and never check back. So, we'll see. I DVR'd it as I'm into theater, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Smash has tons more appeal than Playboy Club ever could have had, so I'm not surprised it did well, but winning the timeslot is a pretty big deal. And if ircam thinks it's good, we at least know it has a fighting chance. It's very early, but this is disconcerting.

Smash was heavily promoted during the Super Bowl....so I think a lot of people tuned in out of curiosity. I have a felling it could give Castle and H 5-0 a run for their money

It appears not only did H50 and Castle get "Smashed" in overall viewers but in the demo too. And, H50 was below the 10 million mark for a sweeps episode. Not good, not good at all. NBC Smash (Series Premiere) 3.8 (18-49 Demo) 11.50 CBS Hawaii Five-0 2.7(18-49 Demo) 9.80 (Million Viewers) ABC Castle 2.0(18-49 Demo) 8.72 (Million Viewers)

Do you think Lenkov had a feeling this would happen, that is why he mentioned that he would like to move the time slot earlier?

Do you think Lenkov had a feeling this would happen, that is why he mentioned that he would like to move the time slot earlier? I don't know if that is such a good idea as it would be up against "The Voice" which is doing even better in the ratings than Smash. To me, 10 pm Tues is looking better and better, but ultimately it is up to CBS on what to do. I'm really concern about it being under 10 million during a sweeps month as I don't know how much consideration CBS gives to Smash being new.

Well, at least HF-0 beat out Castle. Hopefully, once Smash's newness wares off, things will change.

Well, there's also the fact that Lori was still in this episode. I'm never happy about lower ratings, but isn't this what we wanted? Smash was new, people are curious, in fact I almost watched Smash instead. We'll see how next week goes. Hopefully they'll heavily promote next week's episode, people may tune in to see Lori's untimely death. (Ok, a girl can still hope can't she?)

Yes we want them se what down, but you don't want them below 10 million for more than one episode because according to DarkSea that is the point at which you have to start worrying about if there is going to be a season 3.

If I remember correctly, it was below 10 million for 3 weeks in a row? I think? We'll see what next week looks like. If it's below 10 million again, then I'll worry. I'll be interested to get Darksea's input.

I'm really surprised that it was so low, in spite of Bori still being there, because last time she was scaled down so much - and, it looked like a very popular episode with not much chance of it being messed up... Hopefully it is because Smash is new and once a lot of people check it out they'll decide H50 is still better. With the buzz going out that next ep could be her last, viewership should really go up next week. I know I'll be watching with bated breath!

I'm also interested in Darksea's input/corrections.
This is part of Marc Berman's little blurb, courtesy of SpoilerTV. For whatever it is worth
The Voice led into the series-premiere of musical dramedy Smash at an also first-place 7.7/13 in the overnights from 10-11 p.m. Comparably, that outdelivered year-ago occupant Harry’s Law (6.3/10 on 2/07/11) by 22 percent. The audience skew, needless to say, is expected to be considerably younger. And it beat the debut of short-lived fall occupant The Playboy Club (3.9/ 6 on 9/19/11) by 97 percent. Smash was also a huge improvement over recent time period occupant Rock Center with Brian Williams. While this is a very promising start for Smash, retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of The Voice (11.1/16) was 69 percent. And there was a loss of 14 percent in the second half-hour (8.3/13 to 7.2/12). But NBC clearly did what it set out to accomplish, and that was to get Smash sampled.
Capping off the evening for CBS was sophomore crime solver Hawaii Five-O at a second-place 6.4/11 at 10 p.m. Opposite Smash, that was 14 percent below the year-ago evening (7.4/12 on 2/07/11).
The younger skewing audience may mean it will compete more with H5O for viewers than with Castle, which tends to have an older audience.
Is 14% drop in the 2nd half hour significant? If so, perhaps future rating will drop. It would be nice to find out H5O and Castle's ratings breakdown by 1st and 2nd half hour, to see if either show picked up those viewers.
