So I lost power through the night, and it actually just came back on about 20 minutes ago for me. Crazy winds & rain all night. We've been pretty lucky though, no major damage done. Lots of trees down, power lines down, but all in all it seems us Marylander's lucked out. I was really worried about Ocean City, MD. It was looking like it was going to be hit pretty hard, I haven't seen much footage this morning, but it looks like we lucked out. But my thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by the storm.

Still windy here, but the rain seems to be over. There are a lot of branches and leaves lying around. We lost a few trees; some just lost limbs. A lot of debris on the walkway by the water--trash, mostly. I never lost power, so that was good. I guess we'll have some lingering effects, but Irene has headed to New England.

You know what I think is funny? The reporters are saying its not as bad as they thought it would be...several of them are saying this while standing in water that is in places that it is not supposed to be. Or standing next to a tree that is no longer vertical. Had a bunch of governors and mayors not acted the way they did, there would be a lot more than 15 dead so far.
My mom and I were talking about it, there is a distinct Coastal mentality that is different from those of us who live in the desert southwest. Here in the desert southwest, we have epic natural disasters every other week in the form of drought, earthquake, flood, tornadoes, blizzards and wildfire. When we get evacuation orders, we are packing on the fly, those who stay behind, are actively participating in saving their homes, and we have to sign wavers of understanding that if there is an incident, we understand that there is not going to be anybody coming to our rescue. We understand right off the top that even if it is going to be a popcorn fart event, we are not to put other's lives at risk, or they will fine you. If a natural disaster event is within 2 miles of your residence, you are put on notice.
And then there is the other end of the mentality. The coastal mentality. Seen it come out of California and Washington State too. "It's not as bad as everybody says it was, it was all hype, and an unnecessary disruption of our lives." My sister is sitting up there, saying that she lives on the corner of Stupidity and F'in Idiocy, because last night, her neighbors were out in the storm, watching the winds bend trees virtually to the ground.
It's almost a fascinating psychological study.

hey everybody. Its been raining nonstop here for hours (since around midnight) with extreme wind. Our pool is pouring into the yard, there are trees down in many, many places, some major highways are closed, and they have evacuated some of my family members from 20-25 miles away because they are afraid of massive floods and the collapse of dams. I know they are stressed and upset (one of them is 88 and has the chicken pox, which is not good at all) Where I am its not to to bad as far as damage though. At my house we are worried about the sub pump and flooding in the basement...(which has happened before and it is NOT fun). But there is no damage to houses or cars right where I am, thankfully. And my neighborhood has not lost power yet, which is great!
Compared to the last hurricane Irene I was in, in florida, this is nothing. Not that any of this matters, but at the condo I was in, the doors fell in and the glass shattered everywhere, no power for a very long time, we were literally right on the water, trees were down everywhere, and somebody in the building left, with a candle buring, which started a big fire....it was not good.
Hopefully everyone stays safe...I am just hoping that flooding doesn't become a major issue where I am!

Hi Everybody, We're still in decent shape here - I consider us very lucky. Other people here haven't been. The flooding here is unreal, as the many rivers, streams, etc., have gone over their banks. The public school is under water, and some of my friends have had to leave their homes as their basements have flooded beyond belief - some all the way up to the ceiling! The parkways adjacent to the rivers are closed and look like extensions of the bodies of water. It was smart of TPTB to shut these roads at 6pm last night - otherwise people could've been trapped in their cars! My parents' apartment is three blocks from me - and the garage under their building is flooded out, along with the other buildings in that area. Con Ed has shut off power there. My folks are out in Montauk where they lost power at 6 this morning. Spoke to them a few times and they are ok; in fact, going to their neighbors for dinner(they have a generator) and they will charge their cellphones! Middle sis in Connecticut has lost power and they are being told that it will return in 3-5 days. Meanwhile, little sis on Staten Island got her power back at noon today. Right now we have some gusty wind and I just worry that we will lose power, as it has dipped a few times. But we really were very lucky with this one, it could've been so much worse. It was a lazy day today(actually watched Scott in Varsity Blues - oh how funny he was!) and it looks like we'll all be home tomorrow - Metro North RR will not be up in time for the am rush so it looks like hubby will get a 3 day weekend! Again, hugs to all of you for your good thoughts - they are truly and sincerely appreciated.

Things are slowly winding down here. It could have been much worse. I will probably have to telecommute tomorrow, because I doubt the MTA will have things up and running by then. I just have to get my new computer to cooperate. Hope everyone else came through okay. Darksea, that sounds like a "pioneer" or "frontier" attitude. We don't have that on the East Coast.

Hubby will be doing the same from here goldberry, as I don't think Metro North will be operational for the morning commute. Alot of flooding along the tracks and mudslides, downed trees further up the line.

And no flood insurance. I assume that you are talking about Albany, NY right? I live near there, and floods seem to be the big issue around here, along with trees down and power loss. And not to many people around here have flood insurance or anything like that because it is normally not a big issue. I hope everything works out for her, especially trying to sell a house after everything that has happened.

Yep, Albany NY. The house she's got there, flooded basement major. I remember when she lived there, she kept crowing about how the house had access to a riverbank in the back yard...yeah...not a good situation. The pictures she has sent me so far show that the entire basement is a sewage swimming pool.

Yep, they got hit pretty good up there too - and on top of it(don't know if anyone outside of NY heard about it with all the Irene coverage) Albany got hit with a 2.9 earthquake on Saturday afternoon. I hope that all works out for your sister darksea.

Alot of flooding along the tracks and mudslides, downed trees further up the line. Managed to get into work. Just as well because my new computer can't connect yet. Darksea, I hope your sister's situation has improved.
