The good news is that my friend who lives in Norfolk Virgina, made it in to Ohio yesterday afternoon, well ahead of the storm hitting. As for anyone else on the East Coast, I haven't heard anything.

My sister and her hubby and my nephew just moved to New York. I've been checking in with her all evening, so far they are ok, with lots of rain, but plenty of back-up supplies and preparing for a rather long night and day tomorrow.

I live in Brooklyn, NY. The wind picked up about a forty minutes ago and the rain is steady. Apparently, flooding is going to be more of a problem than the wind. The wind sounds plenty scary to me, though.

I'm in Yonkers NY - about 10 minutes away from the NYC border. We have had some torrential downpours tonight along with wind gusts, thunder and lightning - one clap made us all jump! The wind has stopped right now but is expected to pick up. They have altered the track of the storm so now it seems like the center will be slightly west of Manhattan. So for all of us here, it's going to be a bit unnerving for a while. All of the highways are closed up here because they flood when we have some bad T-storms - all this rain is going to definitely put them under water! I hope that all of my H50 friends here who are also in the path of the storm stay safe!

Thanks! Looks like I now have time to catch up on a few things. But for now, I think I'll head to bed; hope the wind doesn't keep me awake.

Thanks for the good thoughts - I'm heading to bed too, hoping I can sleep through some of this. It's raining pretty hard now, and the wind has picked up. Talk to all of you soon.

Is it seriously wrong that I am sitting here watching CNN, and making bets with my sister over text message which idiot reporter is going to get wiped out first? (I'm trying to soothe my sister long distance.)
I'm serious, the reporters are competing for which dangerous shot they can get, and not biff it. The one in Long Island is standing in a wide open parking lot, where you can see rivers of water passing by her and she just checked her hat to make sure it was straight. She's kinda looking like a drowned rat.
We have one on Chesapeake Beach, who, when he was informed that the storm surge wouldn't be very large where he was, he proceeded to climb down a storm wall into an inlet, at the beach area, where the water is up to his crotch and he is having to hold on to a chain link fence, rather than report from his 'boring' area.
Another in I think it is New Jersey or Delaware, is sitting there seeing how far out she can stand in he hurricane force winds before she falls over. Forget the fact that there are projectiles of debris flying all around her.
Another one in Long Beach, was standing on the beach, when her camera man told her 'um, move', just as a series of waves came crashing at her feet. She actually just ran while on camera.

darksea nothing wrong with trying to soothe your sister....I would be doing the same thing.....I just watched the news here earlier and couldn't believe some of the reporters....I think the one that you mentioned on the beach and the wind was blowing and the reporter was swaying back & forth I thought to myself what if the wind picks up...the reporter would have been the one making news flying around..... .....I know the news needs to be told but seriously to put yourself in front of harms way........ Hope your sister & her family are ok..........

Checking in - right now, we still have power. We are getting alot of rain(7 inches since it started last night), but the wind was worse last night compared to now. My neighbor's backyard is completely under water. My sister who lives on Staten Island (part of NYC) has been without power since midnight. I haven't heard from my parents yet - will be giving them a call now. Storm is expected to continue until late this afternoon. Will try to check in later. Hope that everyone in Irene's path is OK.
