In light of the trilogy by EL James I have just finished reading Fifty Shades of Grey & starting Fifty Shades Darker I must say i can't really understand what all the fuss is about....I finished reading the first chapter of the first book & I already knew what was going to happen & how it was going to end.... I have spoken to alot of people who have read them or are still reading them & have all said the same thing that there is no way a virgin would survive physically all that Anastasia (lead female in the book)did with her first encounter with Mr.Grey.... I expected soooo much more & have been left disappointed....It's just the roles have been reversed & the male is the dominant.....nothing new there.... Some of the writing is poorly written....I have read some of the fan fiction on this board & we have better writers here who could out write EL James.....
Hope this has not offended anyone...
Di if you think this is inappropriate to talk about feel free to remove....

I'm not usually short of stuff to read, so the flavor of the month doesn't usually warrant a look, but I did get interested in the over-the-top reactions to the sex scenes, so I checked it out from the library (it takes a lot for me to buy books) and frankly just skimmed from sex scene to sex scene with a little in between for a time frame. It was educational, which was okay by me, but it obviously wasn't going to be anything that would warrant spending much time on. Ain't literature. I kind of supported Ana for being willing to indulge her curiosity, but you're right, meli, it was pretty clear how it was going to go. I did want to see just how she got out of it, that was satisfactory. But not enough to look at the next book.
However, it is handy to finally know what Ben-Wa Balls are for.

I am re reading some Vince Flynn books at the moment, just as good second time around. I am patiently waiting for a new Nelson Demille.
I started to read 50 Shades , but it was the writing style that put me off . Luckily I know so many people that have read it that I got the general gist of it.
I need to get some good books for my vacation , cant beat a good book by the pool.

gbird....all my friends have read the trilogy....I could have borrowed the books from them but I wanted to be able to read it at my own pace and they were $30 for all 3 which is a great price.....
The writing style is one of the factors that threw me.....I seriously can't understand all the hype about it....and they want to make a movie starring Kristen Stewart(Twilight)to play Ana and honestly I just can't see her in that role....Too make into a successful movie they literally have to put in most of the sex scenes afterall that's what it's mostly about.....
I have a range of books that I have been reading....James Patterson all his books...including the Women's Murder Club series & the Alex Cross.... Linda Howard, Alex Barclay, Lee Child, Vince Flynn,David Baldacci those are just afew...also biographies..... .

The reason they want Kristen Stewert is because the 50 shades series started out as a Twilight fanfic and then when the author decided to try to get it published she rewrote it with Ana and Christen instead of Bella and Edward. For those who have read it, try replacing the main characters as above. Make Ana's roommate Rosalie, Christen's brother - Emmett, Christen's sister - Alice, the roommate's brother - Jasper, Christen's adoptive parents - Esme and Carlisle, and the bodyguard as Jacob and see if it doesn't make more sense. As for what I am reading, Dani inspired me to check out the Game of Thrones series, in addition I'm also reading couple of political science books, and a book on meditation. I just finished a local history book about a nightclub fire (The Beverly Hills Supper Club) that occurred here in Cincy in 1977 that killed 169 people.

I was like you all my freinds had it but I wanted my own copy so that there was no pressure to pass it on to the next in line. I will finish it, I might take it on holiday. Sometimes I have to be in the right frame of mind to read a certain type of book (does that make sense). I love Lee Child , although I do have some reservations about the movie that they have made. Some one recommended Harlon Coben to me and now I have read all of those. I love it when you find a new author and then have a whole load of book to catch up on . No interest in Fifty Shades of Grey at all. When Borders went out of business I bought a lot of books, so I am reading my way through them. I got a fantasy series by Lisa Shearin and a mystery series about a woman who works in her aunt's chocolate store. I've read all those. I bought Tanya Huff's Blood Books, but I haven't started on them yet. I also got a bunch of nonfiction--political, religious, and other. So I've got a lot of stuff to keep me busy. Plus my parents' books.

I'm currently reading Transfer of Power by Vince Flynn. Bought it about a million years ago but only recently got around to reading it!! Now I'm completely hooked on the Mitch Rapp character and can't wait to get the other books in the series. It sounds like 50 Shades wouldn't really be my type of book so I confess to not having even flicked through it despite all the hype!

Fiona I love the Mitch Rapp books, I kind of found Vince Flynn books by accident , I picked one up for my other half in a book sale and he loved it and then I read it and then I had to buy all of the others. Ahh, the Mitch Rapp books, those are in my pile of reading material too. I have read several, but have a couple more to go. My biggest problem is that there are tons of books that I have stockpiled either in a physical copy or on my kindle that I want to read, I just don't seem to have the time to read them all. ;D Sweetlikemeli - The meditation book that I am currently reading is call "Meditation for the Love of It: Enjoying Your Own Deepest Experience" by Sally Kempton. I have just started reading it but this is how Amazon descrips it: Drawing on her 40 years as a teacher and a fellow meditator, Sally teaches us how we can connect to our inner longings and creative "shakti" energy to allow the transformative gifts and blessings of meditation to unfold. With playfulness and devotion "two key attitudes in sustaining a daily practice" she shares indispensable guidance for this voyage of self-discovery, including: How to tune in to your own "meditation channel", a bandwidth of tranquility, energy, and joy; - Why you don't need a quiet mind to meditate; - How the force known as Kundalini can fuel your practice; - Connecting to your ever-present Inner Beloved to let go of conditioned ideas about yourself and make space for the True Self to come forth; - Ripening your practice beyond technique into the "sweet mysterious expanse of spontaneous meditation"; - More than 20 practices for bringing the peace and insight of meditation into your daily life. "Remember: what you seek in meditation is your own Beloved, your own inner intelligence, your own Awareness, and your own Truth," teaches Sally. Meditation for the Love of It points us back to our own intimate heart of hearts, our own deepest experience, and the bliss of existence itself. Once I get done with the meditation book I have some other books on various other aspects of eastern philosophies that I want to dig into including some works on and by the Dalai Lama. In addition I also plan on reading Albert Einstein's biography and some of his later philosophical writings (And, yes while he is most know for his scientific career, Einstein did indeed also write extensively about religion, politics and philosophy.)
