Hopefully, I think that if he could just win his first major it would take some pressure of him. I agree, although I suspect there will always be a lot of pressure at Wimbledon. Most certainly.

Well, gbird, guess we'll both have to wait at least another few months until the French Open to get our hopes up again. At least both Fed and Murray gave a good show before losing their semis.

Biochem, I'm watching the US Nationals, Ladies' Short Program, and just when I was thinking, "Isn't it time for a new Michelle Kwan?" here comes Agnes Zawadzki. Scott Hamilton was saying, "this girl can really jump" - boy is he right! She just floats into the air and you can see how relaxed she is, bam bam bam. And the choreography was FANTASTIC! It's not often you see that lately, especially among the newest amateurs. Someone with potential! Who knew? Can't wait to see her long program.

She really has beautiful jumps. Hopefully her style and presentation will develop more as she matures. My favourite of the current US crop of ladies is Alyssa Czysny. Not her best competition but it's nice to see her getting a bit more consistent. She doesn't have massive meltdowns as much any more. In case you haven't yet seen the FP stop reading: SPOILER ALERT! Ah well, Agnes couldn't quite hold it up, but bronze is very respectable and she can chalk it up to a learning experience. Yay for Alyssa to hold it together to take silver. And Ashley was fully deserving of her win, good for her. I have never cared for Rachael Flatt, I find her skating style extremely unattractive, and her technique very flawed. But it is so nice to see someone lay down an awesome skate and be so happy afterwards. Good for her.

Hadn't even thought about her until the FP when it turned out she was way down the standings. I'm really bummed that Universal Sports has gone away from broadcast here since they started up the NBC cable sports network, and I can't see the short programs, and there won't be any repeats of anything. It's awful. There's definitely a whole lot of talent out there, it's just, well, Michelle Kwan was a phenom since the very first time we saw her, and she was so great for so long. Nobody's had that spark since. Most of these girls are a lot older than she was and none of them but until that short by Agnes Zawadzki I haven't seen anybody mix grace and power and heart at the same time in years. I keep hoping. Everybody was pretty good, though. The dancers were great - I hadn't expected any other team to be as close to Davis and White as they got. I just missed all but the last performance of the pairs but man, the top teams, I've barely seen or heard of any of them! Now comes the men. They just promo'd Jonny Weir, so this could be interesting...

A few of the girls can manage grace and power on a good day. Mirai Nagasu, Alyssa, Ashley, now Agnes. What they all lack, that Michelle had, was the consistency to produce brilliant performances every single time.
North American dance is just amazing now. Davis/White will be duking it out with Virtue/Moir for gold at Worlds, but the Shibutani's and Weaver/Poje will be fighting for top 5 finishes, maybe even the bronze if Pechalat/Bourzat implode.
My understanding of all the networks is pretty limited. Up here the main NBC station broadcast your Nationals. Is it a specialty NBC cable channel down with you? They must air it slightly differently here because they haven't shown any of the pairs yet. I'm hoping they'll show highlights of them along with the men, which is airing right now (I'm taping, will start watching soon).

I hadn't even realized that Universal Sports had disappeared. It used to show all of the skating competitions, including the lesser known competitors no one ever talks about.

The top US men are looking strong. If Jeremy can skate like that at Worlds he'll be challenging for the podium for sure.
Denney/Coughlin have potential as well. Should be top 10 at least.

Hey marg and goldberry? And any other figure skating fans out there? Did you watch the World Championships last week? Any opinions?
All 4 disciplines ended up being pretty exciting competitions for once, IMO. And it was nice to see some of the women step up and really fight for the title. Too often the women's champion is the skater who falls the least. I'm so pleased for Carolina Kostner and Akiko Suzuki to finally have real success.

I just thought of it all of a sudden a few days ago: "Gee, I forgot to watch the Worlds". Weird. too much going on, I guess. So Carolina Kostner got gold? She's been around for awhile and she seems to just always miss it. Good for her.

Maybe you can still find clips online somewhere? The dance competition was especially good. Top 4 couples skated really well.

There used to be a cable channel here in NYC that would have had it, but it's gone. There probably are clips online--probably youtube will have them soon. It's nice when everyone does well, rather than those who fall the least winning.

Unfortunately the H5O rerun of crossover part 1 was the victim of rescheduling broadcasts after a long US Open tennis final, but....wow, what an awesome final! At long last Andy Murray has his moment, and gets the monkey off his back?
